Re: TiVo

I'm slightly overwhelmed with the number of posts in this thread, I've tried looking back through it all, but anyway....

I am in contract, long term customer and have XL TV with V+HD, L BB, XL phone. How much will TiVo cost me? Is it £149 for the box, and that's it? Or are there more charges?

Cheers

There is also a £3 monthly charge for the TiVo service.

Thats not to say loads of customers have not been contacted,I'm sure the majority of Virgin customers dont even know about cable forum thus would not be posting on here anyway, I heard a rumour those contacted have got to keep quiet once they've got the install date as it upsets vip and xl customers, that could be the reason its quiet, but it was a rumour

Did that sound more believable when you invented it in your head? I'm kidding of course.

Re: TiVo

I had not heard of tivo s1 users until a few pages back, One assumes that there were not many of them that were Virgin subscribers as the tivo could not do much with the cable system, "like wise the video recorder", you could only record what you watched, so one assumes Virgin have bolstered their customer base a bit by upgrading previous tivo owners, and obviously for sticking with their tivo for all these years they have got themselves a loyalty upgrade before existing customers.

Re: TiVo

Didn't NTL have a deal quite a few years ago offering series 1 tivos? I already had mine then but I'm sure I remember something...

from what I've seen in the screenshots the new tivo seems pretty much the same to operate which is cool, just with extra bells and whistles. I'm hoping it still goes "bloop" when selecting menu items or increasing FF speed etc., shame they got rid of the tivo button at the top tho.

I suspect that the reason Tivo was not doing well because Sky were marketing it, and while I don't mean to imply anything dodgy was happening, it's interesting that Sky + came along shortly after Sky started marketing Tivo, and was in direct competition.

I believe NTL did, but it was not integrated in the the Cable service, so if you were recording something, you had to watch it if you wanted to watch anything on Cable. Unless you had a second STB.

Re: TiVo

I have an install date booked for 15th Feb. I am an ex Series 1 TiVo user and registered in the appropriate places. I asked if I was being offered TiVo because I was a TiVo user but the salesman said he didn't know anything about that. It was just because I'd registered on their website. However, it seems that most people who are being offered TiVo are also Series 1 Users. In fact people who are not in cabled areas are being offered TiVo. Although it's not possible for them to have TiVo in a non cabled area.

With regard to TiVo not doing much with the cable system. I used my TiVo with a Telewest Active Digital box for years and it worked very well indeed. The cable box became just a tuner for my TiVo box and even though TiVo was effecively a single tuner PVR, we missed very few programmes due to clashes as TiVo would pick up repeats. The only reason I moved away from TiVo was that it couldn't do HD. I really, really missed it but the upgrade to HD was quite significant. However, I'm now very happy indeed as I'll have TiVo again and HD.

Yes it used an IR blaster to change channels on the STB and record. It was very reliable though, recording clashes were always sorted by it finding repeats. Even now the season pass I set for Top gear in 2001 still works and tries to flick the V+ STB over, which was good as I never realised the new series was starting. Hopefully the new box remembers series links between series? The only downside is the £10/month just for the EPG data!

This is what I loved about TiVo. It was so reliable and remembered everything. The number of times we were surprised because a favourite series had been picked up again by TiVo. Also, we quite often came across interesting programmes recorded as suggestions. Wishlists are brilliant. The list can go on and on. All this on a ten year old, single tuner device.

Listening to the tivo owners it sounds like it was ahead of its time in spec, so is there really going to be that much of an improvement 10 years on, you can only do so much. Will the hype live up to the expectation or will we come down to earth with a bang.

Sorry. I wasn't told to keep quiet about it. In fact I can't keep quiet about it and have bored everyone silly with it.
