The New UK Crime Map Website

http://www.police.uk

This is the new crime map of Britain and apparently shows the crime hotspots and apparently Newgate St in Newcastle during the month of december is the worst ,i can't verify that because the site doesn't work it crashed and if i try to enter it just nukes my browser .
Anywhoo ,i'm not sure how they manage to work out that newgate st is the worst but it does have about 17 pubs/clubs in one building +another 17 in 100yrds and 10,000 drinkers passing through those doors on a friday night so i rather think that the results are slightly skewed

A new crime-mapping website for England and Wales is experiencing a "temporary problem" as millions of people log on every hour, the Home Office has said.
Hundreds have contacted the BBC website to report problems accessing the site as officials worked to fix the glitch.
The Home Office said www.police.uk was receiving up to five million hits an hour, or some 75,000 a minute.

You would think that one day they would learn to put up a site that doesnt immediately crash. Previous disasters incude the census data, the Highways Agency interactive traffic map last winter.

yeah ,they only spent 300 grand on it obviously no-where near enough for a government website should have been at least 3 million

Re: has anyone managed to enter this site yet

I managed to access it around 2am. Not sure I'm going to be able to attend the next local meeting, seeing as the site says it's not until 12:00am 31st Dec 2099.

If they funded the capacity to cope with the initial demand, it would be a waste of money as that capacity would never come close to being needed again.

Re: The New UK Crime Map Website

I have been trying this all day with no joy.

Just tried it again and was totally underwhelmed at how boring my neighbourhood is...

Thank god.

Re: The New UK Crime Map Website

My old street in Leicester seemed quite exciting when I checked it earlier.

The site getting swamped was always going to happen, I can't see why they didn't roll it out on an area by area basis to stop the initial rush.

Of course it would be interesting to have other information available such as more details on the crimes.

I still think a full listing of all court cases, their verdicts and punishment would be more worthwhile to see exactly what happens once people have been caught and charged.

Re: The New UK Crime Map Website

I doubt it's accuracy. I entered my post code, and was told that in the three or four streets around mine, that last month there were at least 4 burglaries, several violent assaults, a few other crimes and over 120 ASBOs.

Now, the thing is, I live here. I think we would have seen the Police around here a lot more if the area was that bad.

It's also worth noting that according to the official figures, there where only just over 1,000 ASBOS issued in the WHOLE of 2007 for the borough of which the few streets covered by my postcode are a VERY small part.

Well if they hadn't made a huge announcement on BBC 24 it might not have crashed...I doubt it will get any further heavy usage after this.

Re: The New UK Crime Map Website

Here is the Scottish version. A lot cheaper than the new-tangled England & Wales one.
