Good morning Marg. I have moved your thread to the Networking area of the forum and given it a title that describes your problem. You're more likely to get an answer this way.

Re: How do I discover the network key for my VM router?
Try this as you will have to change the password because it does not show in that router.
Do a factory reset of the router so first ensure the router is on and take a pen or a paperclip and look on the back of the router and you will see a row of 5 holes close to the antenna 4 are square and one is a round hole big enough for the pen to go into so take a pen and press the reset button in this hole for approx 20 seconds
connect your laptop direct to the router in port 1 open internet explorer>in the address bar put http://192.168.1.1/ when the login screen appears put in the username : admin and the passphrase : password> the Netgear router page will now appear, down the left side click on Wireless settings>now name your network, something you remember and replace the passphrase with a new one at least 8 characters long and click apply, wait for it to finish updating and close the page.
disconnect cable from laptop and router, ensure inbuilt wireless switched on, go to system tray and look for connect to a network icon click it and find your network name, click connect put in your passphrase and when it says connected open a browser page and you should be connected.

... after that, you'll be able to connect your Nintendo to your network because now you know what the passphrase is.

Re: How do I discover the network key for my VM router?
hi thanks for comingback to me, unfotunately we have problems with the wireless router we dont really want to have to reset it as last time we did but could not get my notebook to work when we tried to get onto the internet.with it. we find the netgear page not very easy and i have 2 laptops secured on is
We are not very good with this kind of thing we really need someone to walk us through on the passwords etc., and we dont know how to secure it either.
we had a friend who set it up for us but we no longer have any contact with them. one thing we dont understand it one of our relations comes with their laptop they cannot get in to our wireless they put the password in but has nver had any luck,
we had an old router and had the same performance with that not sure if the person set it up funny. if you go to our brother in laws we can log onto his router with our laptop without any problem.
just wish we could get in using admin and password but it wont allow us we have tried everything but to no avail. very fed up as we wanted to get onto the internet using the ds

Re: How do I discover the network key for my VM router?
Hi marg, chances are who ever set up your router in the first place has reset the router's network key and login details, hence why you cant connect to it using the default details.
The easiest thing to do is as Masque suggested and do a pin hole reset of your router, which puts everything back to how it was when you first received it, its not that difficult and we are here to help you if you get stuck.
If the worst comes to the worst and you bugger things up you can always stick an ethernet cable directly into the modem from your laptop and come back here for more help.

Re: How do I discover the network key for my VM router?
Once you change the login details then its changed permanently, (unless you do a pin hole rest) and cant be accessed using the original "admin" and "password"
Its recommended you do this to stop people getting their grubby mits on your broadband, your problem would appear to be that you don't know what your friend reset them to, hence the reason you need to reset it.

I can understand why you would like to avoid changing the settings, but I don't see that you have much choice. You don't know what the router's password is. If the password was what you thought it was, then you would have been able to get your relation's laptop onto your network and you would have been able to get your Nintendo on it as well.
The only option you have is to do the reset routine as described by Masque. That's the only way you can get the router to accept admin as the user name and password as the password. Once you get it into that state you can choose a memorable, secure password and start getting all your machines to connect to it.
As Pabscars has said, if you get stuck with it, connect your laptop by ethernet cable directly to your modem and come back here for more help. Remember if you need to do that, you need to switch your modem and your laptop off, connect the cable, switch the modem on, wait until its lights are steady and then switch your laptop back on.

Re: How do I discover the network key for my VM router?
Try admin as the username and changeme as the password. It night still be set up as it was from new and that's why you can't get in.

Actually, that's probably just the hub that's like that so probably best to ignore this. I didn't realise it was an older router.

The advice I gave above should work as the problem with that model is once you login the password looks like this ******** so you will need to pinhole reset the router.

Re: How do I discover the network key for my VM router?
hi we are stilll puzzled about this router can u still help, we have the ssid set as the name of our road, so surely if our son in law bought his laptop wouldnt he put the name of the road in. and then surely you should be able to log on.
if you go to his house you put his password in i think it is the name of his road and you can connect straightaway
i can go onto the internet from my dsi and can find my details but then because it is set up as wpa you have to do the advanced settings it looks like that whichever way we need the security key
we are just not up with this kind of think passphase ssid etc.,
when we set the router up it put the information on my desktop but i had a virus and had to clear the whole stuff off now using laptop.
just wish there was someone who could help set this up again and go through and we could write the things we need down
i really do appreciate your help.
anyway thanks again

Re: How do I discover the network key for my VM router?
Marg, you are confusing two different halves of the process. First, you need to know the username and password required to get in to the router's settings. Do you know these? If you do, you can go into the router admin screen by typing http://192.168.1.1 into the address bar of your web browser. From there you can change the other password - the 'passphrase' or 'network key' that users have to know in order to be able to get on to your network. You do not need to change the ssid (the 'network name'). If it's set to the name of your street, that's just fine. Whatever you like, so long as it's memorable.
However, if you do not know the passphrase and you do not know the password to get into the router settings so you can change the passphrase, then you have no choice but to re-set the router.
In order for us to help you further, we need to know exactly how far you can get with your router's settings. If you put http://192.168.1.1 into your web browser's address bar, can you get into the router's admin settings?

Re: How do I discover the network key for my VM router?
Hi Marg, the ssid is just the name your router broadcast's to the outside world, so when you do a scan for wireless networks in the area you know which one is yours.
I'm afraid you still need to reset your router in order to sort out your problems, don't be afraid of having a go, its easier than you might think.
What part of Masque's original advice don't you understand or are unsure of

Re: How do I discover the network key for my VM router?
The SSID is really just a sign saying this router has this name, for connecting a wifi device it very much depends on if you enabled security such as WEP or WPA, if you did then you'll need the seperate passkey (could be anything from 32/64 characters upwards to connect to the wifi.
Try a scan on the laptop, look for your SSID and then it should tell you what encryption is on the signal (probably in your wifi manager on the laptop)
