I know, and I agree that for most users this is fine. No arguments at all. But if you want to go chopping and changing things to make your home LAN more versatile, there shouldn't be stumbling blocks along the way.

As I've mentioned as much as I'd resent the expense of shelling out for my own gear at first, if VM were happy to support any modem MAC and have it be the customer's responsibility to make sure it's suitable for the purpose that'd be fine too.

Talking of DD-WRT capable routers, this one looks good.

TP-Link TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N Gigabit Router

32MB RAM, 8MB Flash so you can get the full version on there. Also got a USB2 port for adding external storage as a rudimentary NAS. This is exactly the kind of product I'm talking about for making your home LAN really powerful. And it's cheap... cost you less than one of those WNR2000s!

Yeah, but you said "all", it's misleading to say all revisions are supported when it's not "all". It's only C, D and some E.

The WR1043ND is a nice piece of kit, but at over 4x the cost of the DIR-615 with no difference except the gigabit ports and USB, it isn't really worth the extra money. Might as well step up a little more and get a WNDR3700 or DIR-825 for double speed, double wireless capacity, and double the RAM.

All, with exceptions is what I wrote. Unless there's a revision F which I didn't list it's accurate. IMO using the word all is acceptable in this context because the majority are supported, i.e. more are DD-WRT capable than not. But semantics are not the issue here so let's move on.

I don't know where you shop for routers but if you're being charged four times the price of the DIR-615 for the TL-WR1043ND you're getting seriously ripped off!

Amazon UK currently has the D-Link at Â£31.99 and the TP-Link at Â£42.40. Both those prices include P&P.

With such closeness in price and being at the budget end of the market anyway you're better off going for the TP-Link which has double the amount of flash memory allowing the MEGA build of DD-WRT to be used, or the standard version with jffs2 partition if you need it. Also the USB2 port for external storage or network printer, plus three antennas instead of one.

I have this wireless card in my laptop and it's excellent as I noted in my review. Maybe that's swaying my decision, but overall the TP-Link looks like the smarter purchase. AFAIK all their products are based on Atheros chipsets, which tend to perform pretty much as well as the more popular Broadcom-powered stuff.

I had to read it again to get it.

You can get the 615 for that price on eBay, fair enough. What's the story with that I wonder. It seems so cheap that it goes beyond a bargain and seems to suggest it's a really poor piece of kit and you can barely give it away?

Seriously though, if it doesn't totally suck you could buy a couple of them and make a decent DD-WRT home network.

It was given away for free by VM for a year or so. It's not a bad piece of kit, it's simply low demand because everyone gets them for free, there's tons of excess stock in the market and high availability with low demand = low prices.

I was using you in the general sense, i.e. it wasn't aimed at you specifically: "If you're paying four times the Amazon price (Â£127.96) for a TP-Link you're getting ripped off!" Just one of those little misunderstandings that can happen with non-verbal communication...

I'm being sent a superhub and the support technician in India referred to it as a new model.

Does anyone know what I'm likely to be sent or is this actually a new recently launched superhub?

Recently launched would be the Super Hub as it was launched at the start of December.

All standalone modems are now not issued to technicians. If your modem needs swapped by a Technician L bBB users get the hub and XL+ BB users get a superhub. I officially have none in my van now!

I received and installed the Superhub yesterday and am having problems connecting via wifi.

My laptop seems to connect OK and I get 19.5Mb on Speedtest, but the strength of the wifi connection drops off dramatically outside the room where the router is.

I can't get any connection via my iPhone in the next room.

Are there any tips/tricks I should know with this Superhub?

With the use of netstumbler or similar try optimising your choice of wifi channels.
