£98 PCs
Low-cost computers are to be offered as part of a government scheme to encourage millions of people in the UK to get online for the first time.

Prices will start at £98 for a refurbished PC, with subsidised net connections available for £9 a month.

Re: £98 PCs
Did you notice that Reploy 'aim' to produce just 8,000 of these computers this year?
Can't see there's any way that'll encourage "millions" to get online...

Re: £98 PCs
I know there are schemes out there but the refurb one has been a long time coming. the Weee directive has been in place long enough. In fairness I think they should give them away to the very poor as the kids can be kept behind due to lack of a system.Bare in mind a brand new system with NIX installed can be built for under £160 so the 98 quid for a refurb aint that attractive
Just hope they are only gonna be passing on Athlon/PIV systems as min spec anything older will be total pants.

The cheap computers will run open-source software, such as Linux, and will include a flat-screen monitor, keyboard, mouse, warranty, dedicated telephone helpline and delivery.

yer but £160 will not include a flat-screen monitor.

Re: £98 PCs
Considering you can get an 18.5" Monitor from ebuyer for about £75 (which includes their profit), it might be possible to get a refurb system for that price.

Re: £98 PCs
Perhaps if some of these offline people actually spent less at the bookies, off licence and holidays in the sun, they could afford a pc.

Re: £98 PCs
Why bother! I've bought several working PC's from ebay for a lot less than £98, and got Windows , and a legal copy at that. Admittedly they didn't include a flat screen monitor.

Because the people they would be going to might not have your skills or savvy.....
