As for needing a Superhub, until VM announce when and how exactly the upgrade will be offered, and to whom, it's all just speculation. I could say you need an upside down tree and voodoo potion to get 30mb, that wouldn't make it so.
Are you taking the p*s* or what how can you advertise XL Broadband when launched at 30mb but have half your XL customers still only able to receive 20mb churn would soon increase.

re: 20 Mb/s to 30Mb/s free upgrade

They do not advertise XL Broadband at 30mb. They advertise XL broadband at 20mb. Existing customers signed up for XL broadband at 20mb. They're getting a free upload upgrade as it is. They did not sign up for XL broadband at 30mb. Actually if you look at their online shop you'll see what they advertise is 10mb, 20mb, 50mb and 100mb. You bought 20mb, you might be getting 30mb or you might be stuck on the 20mb you signed a contract for. Deal with it.

http://shop.virginmedia.com/home.html

People who signed a contract for 20mb service will continue to get 20mb service (and a free upstream upgrade). If you think there's a problem getting what you signed up for perhaps you're the one taking the p***

Next thing you'll be whining you don't get free 50mb when you pay for 20mb. Or your 2003 model car doesn't get a free upgrade to the 2011 model but new customers do.

re: 20 Mb/s to 30Mb/s free upgrade

How is it wrong to say it's perfectly acceptable for someone who bought up to 20mb broadband to get up to 20mb broadband?

They aren't advertising XL at 30Mb. When they do start advertising it as 30Mb you've no recourse as you've been 'grandfathered' to an XL tier that is 20Mb. 20Mb is what you signed up for and that is what you will get.

So it isn't actually a free upgrade then, more like a new tier?

Every free upgrade is a 'new tier' if you look at it that way else every cable company would have to ensure that every customer had the right CPE to get the maximum speed.

Previous tier upgrades like the 10 -> 20 had many customers who had incompatible modems and had to ask for them, VM may do that this time around, who knows, nothing official yet.

So it's the XL tier / starting point for new subscribers that's being upgraded, not existing subscribers currently using said tier.

Thanks for the clarification..

Yet to be confirmed either way, but I don't foresee any upgrade being "free", as such a tier is 99% likely to be on the DOCSIS3 network therefore the only existing customers to have relevant equipment would be those recently new to XL or those currently on XXL and 100, and well I cant see them giving away Super Hubs for nothing seeing as they haven't even been part of the company's equipment portfolio for 2 months yet.

Your missing the point you signed up to the XL BB service if VM upgrade the service then that should be all XL customers much like if you bought a new TV and a new firmware was released you would get it not just someone who bought the TV after the firmware release date.

Most of you have missed the point. Until such time as VM officiall announce it no-one knows what will be happening of who will get what.

You're missing the point, you did not sign up to XL BB, you signed up to "Up to 20mb" BB. The 30mb service is a new teir. It's nothing like a new firmware for TV (unless your firmware makes your TV 50% bigger). VM may be providing a free upgrade to the new teir, which may be for all users and may only be for some, we don't even know yet.

But you seem to be arguing the principle if a product is updated, you're entitled to get the new version free. There's 6 generations of iPod Nano, does that mean everyone who's ever bought an iPod Nano should perpetually get free upgrades to the newest model forever?

Maybe I should point out again it's not advertised as "XL" it's advertised as 20mb. Up to 20mb broadband. You seem to be selectively ignoring all the big text that says "20mb" and arguing just because 30mb has "XL" in the name everyone should be entitled to it for free. This is not how product naming works.

You'll see clearly in the screenshots (if you bother to look at them) the emphasis is 20mb. Not 30mb. Not 50mb. Not 100mb. Not "XL" with free upgrades to whatever "XL" becomes in perpetuity. You're getting a free upgrade already yet all I hear is complaining you might not get two.

Oh and as for firmware updates, I don't think VM has ever charged for them
