If you get it for free, then fair does. It's not a terrible piece of kit, and far better than most internet providers give as a freebie with the service, but for Â£75 you can get much better standalone.

At the end of the day though, I save far more from WOL and VPN capability; these are crucial to me while the rest is a plus.

Yes you can use software to monitor usage, but only on the computers that are running said software. It's not neccessary but I like to be careful - I'm a "heavy" user and expect to fall foul of VM's "detrimental use" policy any day now. Especially given my area was already considerably overutilized before I got here.

And when your connection dies three or four times a day, sometimes for half an hour or more at a time, having a router with a backup connection is a real godsend.

But the clincher is remote WOL. I often need to access my PC from elsewhere, and being able to turn it off when I leave home and remotely power it on only if/when I need remote access probably saves me more in electricity per year than the cost of the standalone router to do it with.

My D-Link DIR-825, which ticks ALL those boxes (plus it's got quite a fast processor in it - hence why I bought it) is around Â£100 still.

The superhub isn't OTT in terms of pricing - it's probably a wee bit more than it should be, but otherwise, it's not that bad.

My DIR-825 cost Â£65 8 months ago

The WNDR3700 which is basically the same device in a shinier box (and with internal antennas) also starts at Â£80 new from a standard retailer

The DIR-825 is a good router I agree.

Where are you getting your prices from? From a legit UK seller that I have heard of and would be happy buying from, I can see the WNDR3700 priced around Â£120 and the DIR-825 at around Â£90. I bought my DIR-825 for just under a ton a few months ago.

Anyone can do a google shopping search and see prices come up (unrealistically) lower than normal. Usually these prices have a catch based on one or more of the below:

a) The prices that come up in a search are based on said item being "available from 3 sellers" but when you click through to view the place selling it, it is invalid or takes you nowhere, or to an old ebay auction etc.

b) The price excludes VAT

c) The place selling the item is foreign or you have never heard of before.

d) When you come to check out, additional surcharges and/or delivery is added.

e) The product is inferior/refurbed/used

If you stick to proper sellers/stores than my above post stands on current pricing.

I couldn't care less if the place is foreign or I have never heard of it before. I'm not racist when it comes to my shopping, and I haven't heard of 99% of places on the internet. They still deliver the goods.

The link you provided just takes me to google shopping results. The cheapest one is listed at Â£74.67 but when you click on the link to go to the store here, oh look what a surprise the price is now Â£120 incl VAT. If you just link us to where you claim to be able to get it for Â£65 delivered outside of ebay then I'm sure many people would be grateful.

The link I gave you lists results starting at Â£60.99 delivered including those on Ebay. If you have a problem with buying from the cheapest sellers then that's your loss, not mine. Can't help you there.

Had 50meg installed today (going up from 20), told the installer I already had a router that I wanted to keep (running tomato) and he immediately suspected there would be issues.

Once the modem was on and connected it did have a bit of a fit but he was pretty quick to blame the setup, had a root around his van and pulled out a VMNG300v2 CM and used that instead which worked a treat. So the SuperHub is not mandatory just yet, but you probably need to be lucky with what's in the van. He shot off pretty quickly, so I didn't have a chance to do a speedtest. Uh oh!

Well that aint good.

I know what VM will say if I ring them, so I hook up a laptop to the modem directly....

So it turns out that my tomato toting WRT54g can't handle above 26Meg on the lan, looks like I need a new router anyway. Called Virgin up to ask if I could be sent the hub (rather than fork out more for a new one) and they were only too happy to send it for free and even knocked the installation charge off the bill for the inconvenience. Result I think, though would have been happier if my current router had worked, not sure I'll like being back on a bare-bones router.
