That only means the HD version will be Sky Exclusive... not the SD version.

The likely hood VM would get the HD version off bat was always zero.

It as far as I am aware just the HD one is exclusive, VM are going for the SD version.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010) Vol. IV

Sky should be made to split in two 1. Platform and 2. Content provider to stop this crazy situation every time they launch a new channel. Wait until NEws Corp own 100% of Sky with all there advertising might.

Marketing is a wonderful tool.

It's not about having my hopes dashed, it's about not making assumptions about things and presenting them as fact, especially when you have no evidence for it.

At the moment HD is still seen as a premium product (I don't agree) with VM even charging a HD activation fee! Remember Andrew this is the first year of free to view HD to the masses namely Freeview?

In years to come OFCOM will have to look at the question of HD SKY channels being held back from their competitors?

In relation to 3D TV that is one innovation I can live without, if the motion blur I get at the cinema is replicated on sporting events then I will pass

Agreed, I have never sat in Sky strategy meeting, I don't even know where Sky HQ is but what do you know about Sky that I don't...

- They are a business that wants to maximise profits
- They are the largest pay TV provider in the UK
- They have been the focus of a number if investigations over recent years
- Sky were generally considered to have 'lost' the Sky/MV dispute and ended up putting their channels back onto VM at a lower price that was asked for at the start of the dispute
- Currently all SD channels (apart from Sky3+1, Sky Travel and Sky Vegas) are available on the VM platform (may be wrong on that one)

Again, it's not about suiting myself or having my hopes dashed - I personally have no preference for this, if there is a TV show I like I download it - makes no difference to me if VM get it or not. My issue was the assumption that it won't be on VM when you are not able to back it up with evidence.

Sky themselves are not stating it as an exclusive channel, in fact the only place that is saying it is an exclusive channel is Digital Spy and their quality of journalism leaves a lot to be desired. (Click Me)

Anyways, it's getting late, I have to sort the kitchen out, fill the dishwasher and put a new duvet cover on the bed so I bid you a good evening.

But they don't have a platform to hive off. They rent space on someone else's satellites (SES). All Sky own is the encryption technology and of course the all important programming rights.

If VM sold off vmtv without putting in proper safeguards into the contract about gaining access to future channels, then it shows just how stupid (as usual) cableco bosses really are.

They're based in a business park in Isleworth, West London.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010) Vol. IV

In regards to the above advertising campaign running by SKY, I don't believe we at Virgin will be seeing this channel in either SD or HD anytime soon.

When SKY advertise they never mention the SD version of a channel, only the HD version, even though the programmes they are showing will appear on both the SD and HD version of the channel.

See the below examples.

In the SKY Atlantic advert, when SKY mention the channel is free and exclusive to all SKY TV customers I firmly believe they mean both HD and SD just like in all of their other adverts.

Until Virgin confirm there has been a deal done, I'm not convinced. I'm sure Virgin want the channel, but do SKY want to give it?

Horizon I suppose you don't think Sky are getting to big and abusing there position. How do u know Virgin didn't put these safeguards in , don't forget Sky try every dirty trick going , god forbid Virgin and Sky being on a level playing field. It's about time OFCOM grew some balls and made Sky sell all there channels at an agreed wholesale cost , as it stands now competition in the pay TV market is a joke.

Everyone who has not seen this thread before will think the world is going to end over Virgin not having one channel on Virgin.

But as far as I know Virgin hope to have Sky Atlantic from launch but ''talks are still ongoing''.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010) Vol. IV

I would guess Atlantic will make an appearance at some point but I don't see it launching (even in SD) on VM in February. If the HBO content was removed from TV Choice I cannot see us getting access to it through a linear channel, I personally can't see Sky doing that but it's just a guess on my part.

And as someone said earlier regarding the Atlantic 'exclusive to Sky customers' ads, they never refer to SD channels anymore so I take that as read, much like when ITV said their 2/3 and 4 HD channels would be exclusive to Sky customers which of course they still are.

To be perfectly honest as an individual I'm not bothered about Sky Atlantic don't much care for HBO although I would like to see it for the many customers on here who would love to watch it.

Virgin had a great 2010 however I do feel TIVO alone won't win them customers they need to ramp up there HD offering. Virgin don't yet have a kids channel in HD , documentary is lagging with only Discovery and NAt Geo HD , Virgin should concentrate on the non Sky owned HD channels , also they need to change there OD titles more.

From a customer point of view, I agree. I would like access to all channels at the best possible price.

From a business point of view, I disagree. Sky got so big and dominant because they are good at what they do, while all the cablecos were fighting amongst themselves about who was going to buy who. VM could easily have bid higher for premiership rights as can any other company, ie BT. Same goes with film rights and tv rights. What stopped VM making an exclusive deal with HBO? Nothing. Sky did it and not for the first time either.

If Tesco signed an exclusive contract to sell the next ipad, would that mean that all the other retailers have a "right" in law to claim unfair practises against Apple, because they can't sell the ipad too?

If vm put safeguards in, why are we back to this position again of not getting access to Sky Atlantic HD? Because they didn't, that's why.

From a customer point of view, its a pain in the neck. From a business point of view, Sky are not there to make things easier for a competitor.

Exactly. There is nothing stopping vm doing those things, they choose not too. Should Sky be punished for that too?

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010) Vol. IV

Sky were very quick to piggy back on BT's network with there broadband and unless I'm mistaken this was available to them due to regulation. Sky have there kit installed in BT exchanges. Sky are to big and will be potentially bigger if News Corp take 100% control. Many big firms have been regulated don't forget Microsoft now have to offer you the option of web browser you wish to install , it's called abusing your Market position.
