AFAIK the problems with ice building up on an aircraft are

a)Extra drag & loss of lift, especially when trying to take off
b)The chance ice build up will stop the control surfaces (flaps, leading edge extensions, etc) working properly.

In order for ice to form there must be water/water vapour present in the air - at 35,000 feet & -55°C there is much less water vapour than at ground level, so the aircraft is less prone to icing up at high altitude, than it is lower down.

It also has to remembered that rock salt and grit cannot be used on runways for obvious reasons ,which people quite often forget

Well we had a dusting of snow yesterday am then a rise in temperature and driving rain has gotten rid of the last of the snow..we are clear but I'm not sure how clear it it north of Fareham and Portsdown Hill.I gather much of Hampshire was/is still covered by snow and ice.The last I heard Southhampton Airport was still working.

Just a very slight freeze overnight, barely any on my windscreen.Too much cloud to see the eclipse sadly.

Getting pretty bad in Redcar right now, was already a foot of snow and it keeps on falling, looking over the road at the wall it must be close to 2foot in places. Place is like a ghost-town too, no cars at all with only the occasional bus going at 5mph.

my take on this is he gave up his bonus because it was easier than resigning over his abject failure to keep a couple of bits of tarmac snow free ,and thus caused total chaos -not to mention the farce of people sleeping on the airport floor - off with his head i say .

Wife skidded on sheet ice and rolled the car on Tuesday. Bumped and bruised but ok ... our 2-year-old came out of it almost unscathed, thankfully. Car's probably a gonner though. Thankfully she doesn't remember the state it was in when it came to rest, but I saw it and it's scaring the living daylights out of me.

Just thankful to have my girls home and safe though.

I am relieved to hear that your wife and youngster are OK Chris, I remember seeing my Father's car after it had rolled and couldn't stop shaking for days even though both he and my Mother walked away with only a few injuries the "What ifs" wouldn't stop running through my imagination.

I must admit to being very inexperienced at driving in the snow and ice and have had a couple of breath holding moments over the last couple of weeks. I know the theory behind winter driving but putting it into practice is another matter.
