Re: Virgin to give new Superhub out.
Any more opinions on the new superhub? I take it you certainly can never flash to say DDWRT with the all in one new superhubs? I gather this superhub is based on the netgear wndrXXX ? Also, can it be used solely as a modem? Not that I think I will want to. As I say, seems really good to be honest.

Re: Virgin to give new Superhub out.
AFAIK DD-WRT doesn't support any cable modems, so if DD-WRT can go on it, you'd lose that part of the unit.
OpenWRT only supports a handful of ADSL modems, (And I don't know how well they work). AFAIK, it doesn't support any cable modem hardware.
If it can't be used as a modem, or worse can only in the way the the BT business hub does, then I wont be using one.

Re: Virgin to give new Superhub out.
All firmware is signed and updated OTA by Virgin Media, so flashing it yourself wont be an option. There will be an update to allow it to be cable modem only and while the Gigabit ports and other things do put it on a par with the WNDR series of routers, it's based on another Netgear family of equipment.

The only problem i've had so far is that after a few days one of our laptops could not connect, it was saying it was the wrong wi-fi password even though it was correct. Just turned the hub off and on again and it worked. Hopefully its not a regular problem.

Re: Virgin to give new Superhub out.
Had the superhub for about a month now and had no issues at all. I personally think its a great bit of kit.

Re: Virgin to give new Superhub out.
OK I found a couple of restrictions which I forgot about before. It does not support QOS. There are no options to configure this. (Not a major issue for me personally as don't use it). Additionally, I think although it is dual band, I think I am correct in saying that it cannot do simultaneous dual band frequencies? i.e. It is either 2.4ghz or 5ghz and not both at once. Again personally for me not a biggy because anything I care about in terms of bandwidth is hard wired.

Having the superhub does not stop you using your own wireless AP or router.
And as mentioned, there is a fabled future firmware update that *will* allow it to function as a modem only at some point.

Thank you. Does the engineer need to access the socket which the white cable is plugged into, or does he do all the work in the main box outside? The said socket is in the corner of a room which is currently overflowing with 'stuff' and it is rather hard to get to it. Accessing the other end of the cable and the modem is not a problem.

It should be fine if he can remove your existing modem from the white coax.

Thanks, that's good to know! I will call CS tomorrow, maybe they will be able to upgrade me before Christmas. Well, snow permitting, that is.

Re: Virgin to give new Superhub out.
I have booked an engineer's visit for Friday, as the offer VM made me was acceptable. However, the lady said that the Superhub is not suitable and I will have to have a high-speed modem and a separate router. She could not elaborate on the details of these but insisted that Superhub would be no good for a 50MB connection. So now I am confused! I told her that I wanted a wired connection, not a wi-fi one, and she said the engineer should sort that out.
Does anyone know what this high-speed modem might be? Surely the Superhub is the thing to use, since it's supposed to cope with 100MB as well.

Re: Virgin to give new Superhub out.
I think she's the confused one. She's thinking about the non-Super Hub.
For 50Mbit you will get the SuperHub

Thank you both, hopefully she is wrong, since it really didn't make any sense to me.
