The 10Mb worth of reserved bandwidth (I can only assume) will use frequency on the existing coax entering the premises, so I don't see what else is to be done within the premises than a STB swap (providing the incoming signal strength is sufficient).
Am of course open to someone explaining why this isn't the case if my assumption is wrong.

Any technical reason why this is the case?
Or is it more a customer satisfaction issue?
Or a decent way of making additional revenue?
Not necessarily having a go - just interested is all.

Haven't read anywhere the TiVo box contains a web-browser - does it? Be interesting if it does.
Or is it the walled garden of approved internet-connected apps we have seen and read about?

customer satisfaction, plus the installer will demonstrate the product. This will cust down on support calls and ensure the product is fully working and there is no signal issues.

I'd be quite happy to do a self-install and pay for a call out later if required, to try and keep the cost down initially. Would free up VM's field engineers to do something else too.
Won't happen I suspect, but would be a good option for those comfortable with the product and their ability to make the swap.

It may be an option in the future, but for now it will only be manned install. We need to make sure the customer experience is excellent with this premium product

usually added to your bill, Customer care/sales would be the best to ask once launched.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010) Vol. IV
According to Cable.co.uk this is a feature of TiVo that I hadn't seen before
"What sets the new virgin TiVo box apart from other digital video recorders is the ability to scroll backwards through the onscreen viewing guide and record programmes that you may have missed from the last 7 days. This really is a quantum leap in TV technology and will completely revolutionise the way in which we enjoy our favourite programmes."
and later in the same piece
"Chief amongst the new features is the ability to record programmes you have missed. Users can scroll back through the electronic programme guide up to 7 days into the past. Programmes are then retrieved and stored on the TiVo’s internal hard drive for you to watch when you are ready."

If true, this is a really useful feature.

It has its own dedicated 10Mb connection which does come down the same line to its inbuilt modem and has no effect on your existing connection which will still run at full speed.
It says that you can check your Ebay bids and Facebook so maybe no a browser as such but an App instead.
More information can be found in this link. http://tivo.virginmedia.com/public/apps_games

So a dedicated application specific to what you want to use, e.g. ebay, rather than an open browser. Just like iphone where you download your ebay application to access that site and so the same principle applies to the Tivo box. Building up a suite of applications users could download (assume it is a choice on the box) is a really useful and different aspect which will differentiate this box from others. It is more than just TV now but a central communication device, convenience in your living room is the message.

From what I have read they are releasing early to current customers and some staff to get some buzz going, a bit of desire based advertising which in my mind is a great way to soft launch with limited stock. So considering that I think there doing all they can to make sure that buzz is a good one and they don't end up with a load of people moaning online about the service.

Sounds really good. Wonder how it would work though? Would it record from On Demand?

Not sure about that but if true it's the only way to do it.
I can tell you that when you do go "back in time" the programes available to watch on demand have a little "c" symbol on them. See below:

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010) Vol. IV
If they are already there, can you disable them e.g. stop facebook being used or subject to a PIN? All will be revealed when the first boxes are running I guess.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010) Vol. IV
Thanks, a parent may not want their children using facebook say so the Tivo box could be a way of them getting around a "parent ban" if there is no control for restricting access!!!
