Re: Traffic Management Policy

I'm not convinced all is well and it's driving me mad.

Up until last Monday I was on 20Mb and via Usenet I always got the full whack in the evening - usually about 2.34Mb/s downloads. I don't download a lot as it's usually over night but sometimes I need to download 350Mb in the evening. Not much.

Tuesday I was upgraded to 50mb and it's been bobbins ever since. It will jump to around 3Mb/s and then rapidly drops until it hangs at around 2-3K/s.

How can it be fine one night and then awful the next and continue to be awful? Makes me wish I had stayed on 20mb.

Depends on if you are willing to just take it. I decided to make sure that i had alternatives in place so that i could continue to use the connection i pay for at the time i need to use it. That speed you see there is achieved by using a combination of options and tools . Before you ask my area has been hit with the shaping because if i turn off my options then i get shaped.

More it depends if the guys implementing the shaping did it properly or not. If they didn't, which they didn't, avoiding it is relatively easy. No need to use tools particularly a few limited options are just fine.

As igi said above its not hard to sort it out. It took me all of 3 minutes to work it out .

However to clear it up, No i will not be saying how i did it as that could be turned against me legally

And it was a TV episode from the BBC for which i pay a TV licence, But that's for another thread i am sure

I am sure they will eventually sort it out and stop us but until then i am enjoying my game of cat and mouse.

All i will say is you need a paid for newsgroups account that allows ssl

I dont use torrents so cannot help you there

Re: Traffic Management Policy

@Sirius

I'm with newshosting.com (never had problems, using on and off around 5years) but only got these problems when I moved back home (virgin). Ive tried 563 and 443 but still same problem Although I only tried 443 this morning after I had already been capped using 563. Which do you use?

---------- Post added at 17:51 ---------- Previous post was at 16:17 ----------

I can confirm that traffic shaping will be enforced regardless of what port you use for Usenet, with or without SSL.

@sirius - you're very lucky

Ho ho ho its off to Sky I go..

Re: Traffic Management Policy

All I can say is I haven't figured out how the hell this whole traffic shaping thing works, but it's extremely inconsistent. For one, I can download the same file three times, from the same server, on the same port, using the same protocol and get completely different speeds.

One download could go at 1-3mbps, if I cancel and resume it may jump to the full 50mbps, if I cancel and resume again, it'll be capped to 15mbps. Almost feels like STM as it seems *all* my transfers get capped to 15mbps sometimes, nomatter what protocol or server, but only after I've downloaded >5GB - but again it's so inconsistent I have no idea what it really is.

I am not that bothered. I will just move my downloads to daytime when the traffic shaping is not online if the traffic shaping interferes to much in the evening.

I can log into my pc using team viewer on my iphone and setup anything i need to download while i work if i have to.

However i can confirm that at this time i can download anytime i want using ssl and vpn so i have no need to go to extreme measures yet

That was my initial plan Sit in work and download stuff as it comes to mind, except I get capped from 9-3 and 5-9...I just started using myNZB (iPhone) & Sabnzbd, its a really good setup, you should give it a go.

I hope you don't think Virgin will be unhappy about people who leech a ton from newsgroups leaving?

They want heavy users to leave. Well some do, the people who get commission for getting you to stay will tell you whatever you want to hear

At what point did I mention Virgin being unhappy about any of this? All I want is the freedom to download during the day as apposed to leaving my pc on overnight.

Re: Traffic Management Policy

My lad's been whingeing for the past couple of weeks that he can't play Forza Motorsport on Xbox Live properly because of lag... beggars my browsing up when he's hosting a game as well so if this is anything to do with packet shaping then someone's either not done it right or customers who play online games are also penalised as "file sharers".

Either way I really don't want to hear anymore complaining, certainly not over Christmas so I will be voting with my feet in the very near future despite not being a user of torrents, usenet or whatever else Neil Berkett wants to pontificate about. I would suggest that he starts treating paying customers as customers and not some kind of pariah.
