the netgear router (a little rant)

It's not just me is it? I have had no end of trouble since saturday with the new netgear n router supplier by vm. My trusty old store bought linksys with the ambit 255 modem served me very well in the years i used it, but this router is just awful

after a quick phone call and a chat with a lovely lass called Keely, she has agreed to send me out an ambit 256 so i can get back to how i was.

its not just me is it? is this netgear router really that bad? anything i can do to get a second xbox on live without it dropping connection?

Re: the netgear router (a little rant)

Ambit 256 is a modem not a router. It would look like a modem issue not a router one.

Didn't reliase, my fault. Perhaps VM wil ditch the idea of hubs, god knows what will happen with the 100Mb roll out as they will all be super hubs and they can't get the normal ones right!

Re: the netgear router (a little rant)

Yeah sorry, i mean the netgear vmdg280 they gave me on saturday due to a house move. they said my old ambit 255 was not pairing with the service whatever that means. it worked fine last time i moved house.

anyway the girl on the other end of the phone was nice enough to post an ambit 256 out in the post so i can use my wrt54g2 router again. i think the only time i ended up resetting everythin was once in the last 2yrs and that was only because we had a power outage.

what happens when i receive it then? i know im to wire it up without the router initally and call vm to get it activated, but what happens to this hub. do i post it back to vm?

Re: the netgear router (a little rant)

just a little update. my ambit 256 came today but with being at work i missed the delivery. iv arranged a mate of mine to come house sit tomorrow and arranged for re-delivery.

question still stands though... where do i post the netgear router/modem combo? surely vm will want this junk back?

Re: the netgear router (a little rant)

That's what I'm thinking. They didn't ask for it back and one user over at the vm board was told to hang onto it? This surely isn't right but it doesnt surprise me why there's loads on eBay :/

Just on my way home anyway, mate said modem has arrived so fingers crossed I will have my net back to normal by 7pm. (fingers crossed tech support don't take too long registering the mac address)

Re: the netgear router (a little rant)

The superhub is actually quite good... Would be better to have the choice of a router-modem all in one or just a modem though... Some people would rather use their own routers..

I was under the impression you can make the superhub a modem too

The only way you would know that is if you were trialling one. However choice would be better for the customer especially if they had their own kit and were on 50Mb, no engineer for install just a config file to the modem-upgrade to 100Mb done.

Exactly. At the moment there is no option to turn it into a modem only... You can obviously disable the wireless etc etc though.

While this is technically possible, in practice even that method leaves a lot to be desired with the vmdg280 (from my personal experience no more then 3 nights ago it was awful). Happy to report I got an Ambit 255 in the end. Mac registered in 10mins have everything connected online with no problems for hours last night. Just need post modem log later so you can all check and see if it's 20meg I'm getting if you don't mind? I always forget what I'm looking for

In the modem configuration page, what downstream part should i be looking for regarding speed
