My betting is that there will be a lot of nimbyism, but hey when the lights go out...
Can we really rely upon Wind and Solar power in this country where we get sod all sun and no one wants a windmill in thier back yard either?

Planning enquiry rules have been changed so the alleged fundamental 'wrongness' of a thing can no longer be submitted as an objection. That makes it more difficult for Greenpeace and their like to hold these sorts of things up for years.
Additionally, most if not all of these are at or adjacent to existing nuclear power stations, which takes care of a lot of other potential objections such as loss of amenity, traffic increase etc.
On the other hand, they will have to be built, maintained and dismantled entirely by the private sector. There's no Government money. So there's no guarantee that any of the eight proposed sites will get a new power station.

Should that be worry ?,having private companies in charge of nuclear energy ,are there enough safegaurds in place to protect against accidents caused by "efficiency savings"

I think that is the key phrase ,we must insist on safety and maintenance coming before any cost issues ,can we rely on private companies doing that ?.If we can then i have no issue with nuclear power

Re: 8 New Nuclear Power Stations?
Could have done with them earlier but better late than never..But I also think we need to explore ALL alternative avenues of power as well.

We don't actually have time, lights will be going out if we don't get something done. We've spent so long 'exploring' that we are actually in real trouble now.
Obviously new avenues must and will be explored, nuclear fission is never anything other than a stopgap until we get the hang of controlling fusion.

Re: 8 New Nuclear Power Stations?
This makes the cancellation of the Forgemasters loan even more puzzling

It seems a small price to pay to keep skills & capability within the UK, imo.

Re: 8 New Nuclear Power Stations?
I spent 7 years on nuclear submarines our safety record is second to none and we know how to operate nuclear power facilities.
The only issues is the storage disposal of the waste products but hey atleast we will all have a year round healthy glow
