William Hague promises UK sovereignty law

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-11484355

Quote:
Foreign Secretary William Hague has promised a sovereignty clause will be included in an EU bill to be introduced into parliament this year.
It will make clear that EU directives take effect in the UK only by the will of Parliament, which can be withdrawn.
He told Tory members legislation would be introduced this autumn.
Sounds like a plan..

Too little, too late, we need to be unencumbered from some of the garbage they have already foisted on us, and our massive contributions to this hotbed of waste and corruption given a massive cut.

Re: William Hague promises UK sovereignty law

"The European Union Bill will also include a "referendum lock" - which will mean there has to be a public vote before any treaties are signed transferring powers from Westminster to Brussels."

Never going to happen, look what Cameron has backtracked on so far.

If it wasn't going to happen, why announce it?

The devil is in the detail..

"EU directives take effect in the UK only by the will of Parliament, which can be withdrawn."

I guess that's easy to say. I just wonder when they might find the courage to do the withdrawing.

I for one want to see it happening very quickly so the EU are then aware that we mean what we say.

Absolutely. We need to take EU directives as advisement only. Pick and choose what suits *this* country.

Re: William Hague promises UK sovereignty law

When it happens i will applaud and this should apply retrospectively to all EU legislation that applies and then i will be very happy. Sorry but i loathe taking lectures and laws from an organisation that cannot even legally balance it's own damn books.

Re: William Hague promises UK sovereignty law

It will be retrospective, in that it makes clear that the only reason any EU Directive, past or future, applies in the UK is by virtue of the European Communities Act 1972 - and Act of Parliament which, like all other Acts of Parliament, can be repealed at any time.

Re: William Hague promises UK sovereignty law

I'll support this if it happens.

The EU should be about facilitating trade and cultural links between member states and representing wider European issues around the globe. It should not be about forcing diverse member states conform to 'one size fits all' laws, currencies, exchange rates or anything else.
