TBB acknowledge that there are issues with the VM network and their test servers.
eg

http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/tbb...the-creek.html
Here is a TBB test result done just now on my 200Mb connection. It is way, way, way below what I get on the reliable trial test server. (Can't show you that either.) The up speed result is also inaccurate.

|
I said that the TBB tester could handle 200Mbps and upwards without issues - there's nothing they can do if there's insufficient capacity between them and VM. The issues with the TBB tester and VM customers are due to a lack of bandwidth on the VM side of the link to TBB. This doesn't just affect TBB it's actually to one of the LINX LANs.
In the items you copy/pasted you'll note that it's clearly stated the issues are with VM, not TBB....

VM has some routing issues to our servers, it has been pointed out to them, but looks like they've not implemented the fix yet

There are some known congestion issues with one ISP and the route often used to reach us, it is beyond our control, but we did investigate and report a solution they could use.
|
Guess who the ISP is?
Also the guy on the Post Office service's issue with the tester was transient - TBB did nothing and it fixed itself. Probably a problem on the BT Wholesale network.
If you're on the 20 or 50Mbit variations of the 200M trial I can also easily believe that there are inaccuracies upstream - to get an accurate upstream speed requires a reasonably functional downstream path.

I think we are agreeing. You said 'without' issues', but clearly there are issues, regardless of whose fault they are. VM would do well not to complain about their stats being misrepresented until they sort that issue out. Thing is, unless the test servers can be accessed with only 3 steps, router -> headend -> testserver, with a ping <3ms then there will always be access issues to one degree or another.

No I specifically said the TBB tester could handle 200Mbps, said nothing about the intervening networks and routes on the way.
Mr Telford was blaming the TBB tester for his poor speedtest which isn't the case.
Incidentally not having a test server sitting at your headend doesn't inevitably cause access issues to one degree or another. While you guys on trials get a speed tester stuck into your headend everyone else whose performance is measured goes onto the Samknows testing which is off network.
Your speedtest is purely devoted to measuring your access network performance for feedback to the trials team, it is pointless for anything else as the Internet doesn't live at Coventry headend

Re: 50mb Broadband - Post Your Speed & Vote
Oddly, since i reformatted to Windows 7 instead of Vista a couple of days ago my speeds have improved.
Probably just due to a cleaner system.

Pleased, free installation and whatnot and it's only £6.99 more expensive than my 20mb package

...........and Windows 7 uses less resources than XP or Vista so more CPU will be available for your speed tester to run better.

Please don't use test servers as a true indication of your actual speed. Most will be wrong. London is a better one, but 350 miles is a long way.
Try downloading some big files from a free trial games sites all at the same time. The totalled speed will be a better indicator.

I never stated that speed test servers were a true indication of speed or connection the only method VM recommend is downloads from their own game servers not other free ones.
I merely pointed the OP to the London server as it gives the most consistant results of those available on that particular site. 350miles is not a long way in terms of BB just look at the difference in the ping in both his posts.
I will advise him however to open his own thread and post his modem stats and log files so we can have a look.
BTW XP and Win7 are about equal in the use of rescources, Win7 is basically a vista GUI with an XP engine under the hood.

Re: 50mb Broadband - Post Your Speed & Vote
For the mostpart im fine but my power levels are fluctuating since the cab in the street was open to the elements for 2 weeks and they r trying to tract down the problem as its causing speed to go as low as 28mb down and 800k up.
