Angry Internet Connection Problems

Hi Guys, I have a desktop at home & had no internet connection problems until recently it started dropping connection regularly, after speaking to Belkin who fixed the problem my router then stopped working completely with no lights at all. Around this time i bought a Sony Vaio on windows 7 with an core i3 processor as my desktop was being used mostly by the children. When i connected it to the internet everything was fine with both desktop & laptop able to work wirelessly simitaneously(this was before the router stopped working) After a few days both began to lose connection, so I purchased a new N router from Belkin & got connected only to find I still was dropping connection sometimes.
The Vaio says it is connected to the default gateway & shows 5 bars with a yellow warning mark, but I cannot connect to a site, when i try to get it to troubleshoot sometimes it will resolve the problem & other times it sats there is a problem between the network card & the router.
The desktop is now showing no bars and is acquiring network connection, & my internet light on my belkin router is orange instead of green.
Sometimes the laptop will connect first & the desktop will not connect at all & sometimes vice versa.
I dont know if it is a phone line problem or a problrm with the vaio.
Someone did say that my anti virus could be causing a problem but desktop has avg9 free version & laptap has avg 9 paid version. Would this affect the internet conncetion on my router.
Please help as i am at my wits end, i have had a friend who is an IT technician work on both of them & of course it all worked before she left but the next day nothing works. HELP
