In my opinion the most important reason for a custodial sentence for a crime of this nature isn't punishing the perpetrators (although they clearly need to be punished) it is ensuring the public are protected from them. If it was up to me they wouldn't be let out until we could be absolutely confident that they won't do it again. I can't see how we can ever be completely confident of that and even if it's possible I'm damn sure it would take longer than two years.
