Can I remind people that if you have to resort to personal attack then we'd rather you didn't post at all.

There will be no more warnings in this thread

When all they have left is to resort to personal attacks then the argument is won. Why else would they move away from the subject and just attack the poster.

Re: All Chipped Cable Boxes Going Down

Pardon my ignorance, but hasn't each card its own ID? If VM see the same card being used twice, can't they shut both down?

No doubt "it doesn't work like that"

If they use a Virginmedia card and the number is known it will be wiped from the network.

Well most the new boxes have "built in" cardsharing, so I was referring to those rather than needing a seperate cardsharing sub. They're the ones that most people are going to gravitate towards because they're the easiest to use, and also the easiest to block.

The main reason why VM won't be too worried about cardsharing though is because if you're getting into cardsharing it makes MUCH more sense to just get a satellite. Cardsharing on cable is like stealing a skoda when there's a ferrari parked next to it with the keys still in the ignition.

As for cards being able to be linked to cardsharing servers, not really. The cardsharing servers only respond to requests that won't identify the card, you're not going to track a sub by just querying the cardsharing server and it giving up the cards ID numbers, the only requests it responds to are decoding the ECMs to give the control words, which aren't going to give away anything. Any cardsharing client that starts making requests that would reveal the cards identity would be quickly blocked because they're designed not to.

It's no where near as simple as seeing a card being used twice, only the original card will ever be seen on the network, the clients never appear on the network and all the clients ever know is the codewords to descramble the signal. The only way to detect it would be to detect that that card was being used in a 3rd party receiver and prevent them from working outside of authorised stbs. That's the real cat and mouse game, one that Sky have been playing for many many years.

Re: All Chipped Cable Boxes Going Down

Back on topic please

Concerning card sharing, most people seem to think that because they use VPN that VM can;t do anything about it. The most crucial detail is that VM don't need to stop the internet feed (they can do that though if they go through the correct channels no matter where in the world the server is based (all ISP's around the world sign up to certain conditions allowing them to use the backbones of the world)

Instead the easiest and fastest way is for VM to simply stop the card details being valid As all cards are sent out to a UK address and is the responsibility of an account holder this does also mean that they can ban addresses and/or people from ever gaining another account.. Even stolen cards can be cancelled like stolen credit/debit cards

Again, IF you can find out what card is being used.

It's really not a simple process to do that. You can't track it by an attack on the cardsharing server because they're well protected against such things, the cardsharing server is never going to reply with anything that would identify the subscriber.

It really is amazing how there's such a big cottage industry built around cable, so many boxes that exist solely to illegally obtain service and nothing seems to be able to be done against the manufactures.

Back at the start at least the boxes were foreign market ones that had been modified so they at least once had a legitimate use, now they're all purpose built and I really can't see how they can be so openly sold.

Re: All Chipped Cable Boxes Going Down

At the end of the day if your getting services in such a manner then you're nothing but a tight arsed git! And good luck to you when it all ends and hopfully get a stonking great big fine!! Yeah we have all these arguments saying that the channels are sent through anyway and the company is not losing money. But if you want it, PAY FOR IT! I don't take a newspaper from outside a garage and not pay cos it ain't in the shop do I?

I just love it when I goto the local and the people complain about virgin saying they took away their channels that they were not even paying for the in the first place and they were moving to Sky. Makes sense hey
