Xbox Live

Xbox live will work for a few days then suddenly when I go to test connection it says I have moderate nat... I then reset my router and it normally works after that but lately it says It cant connect to the network and now I cant connect to xbox live. I have done everything I can to not have nat issues on the xbox and I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem or how i can fix it. thx

Re: Xbox Live

What you need to do is give you XBox a static IP address, then in your router assign that IP with a range of ports that are to be open.

I had to do this as I was getting problems with GTA:IV, and it solved issues with MW2.

What router do you have?

or use DMZ no need for port forwarding.

I plug my xbox straight into the modem,if you give your xbox the same mac address as your pc you don`t have to refresh the modem, just switch the cable.

Does it matter what static IP I give it? I changed the ports quite a while ago but it's anoying now because I get open nat but then the next day I may have moderate or strict and when I reset my router or modem it usually works but can take a few goes. My router is a linksys and my modem is the old NTL one.

Re: Xbox Live

It sounds like your UPnP is flaking out on the Linksys for some reason. Static IP with DMZ or port forwarding will bypass UPnP and so should work. You could try a firmware upgrade on your Linksys if it isn't a Virgin one. That may cure the problem.

If possible you should go in to your DHCP server settings on your Linksys and reserve a static IP address for the MAC address of your Xbox. If you don't have that facility on your Linksys (I don't on my Draytek) then you'll need to use an IP address that is on your LAN's subnet (so for the 192.168.1.xxx subnet you could use 192.168.1.2) but not within the range that the DHCP server uses on your Linksys. I always go in to my router when I first get it and set my LAN DCHP range to start at 20 e.g. 192.168.1.20 to 192.168.1.100. Then I use 192.168.1.2 - 20 for static IPs on my LAN (I use 192.168.1.1 for the router itself).

Re: Xbox Live

What you could do is bypass the router and connect the ethernet cable directly to your xbox eliminating the need to worry about nat settings, its what I do.

Re: Xbox Live

My old router was a linksys and I will say it was the worst ever. I solved it, but taking the power jack out of the router then putting it back in. I of course had port forwarding set up/ip assign to the xbox, but 2 times out of 3 when I turned the xbox on, the NAT would be moderate.

When the router restarted and signed into live, nat was back to open.

No, but I gave the last digit a high number.

Most home networks have the following number 192.168.1.x / 192.168.2.x

I had no choice but to go wireless.
