hi all is there a way to get sky movies hd full screen, movies on itvhd and film 4hd fill the screen and look great were as all the skyhd lose about 2/5 of the screen

They show the films in the original aspect ratio so if it's wider than 16:9 (widescreen TV ratio) then you'll get black bars top and bottom.

You might have a custom zoom option available on your TV - it will be called different things depending on your make and model. On my Samsung TV, I can adjust the vertical zoom using the picture size options, so I can eliminate the top and bottom black bars.

Of course, the downside is that you have a slightly stretched picture but I prefer this to having the bars. So, it really depends if you want to watch it as the director intended, or have it stretched, but then have no black bars on the top and bottom of the picture.

21:9 aspect ratio !!

As I believe it you can not modify the output from the HD channels they stay in their aspect ratio and can not be stretched etc so you don't have the black bars.

I'm always gobsmacked at how many people stretch their picture so they don't have a bit of black. You do realise you are messing with the look and people end up with stretched bodies etc?

it doesnt bother me im more annoyed at espn showing live european football with two big espn logos down each side of the screen.

Nothing they can do if they don't have access to a widescreen feed.

I wouldn't mind them so much if they were grey like the US version of ESPN HD rather than the red ones they use.

that would be better imo.
sometimes on other channels, i dont know if youve noticed but they even blur the two sides of the screen which looks terrible.
its about time the tv broadcasters upped their game and show everything in widescreen.
its not as if widescreen technoligy is cutting edge,i think ive had a widescreen telly for about the last ten years.

Yes, Sky Sports do it on the highlights package on their NFL broadcasts. It's very disorientating on fast-moving sports footage.

its about time the tv broadcasters upped their game and show everything in widescreen.
its not as if widescreen technoligy is cutting edge,i think ive had a widescreen telly for about the last ten years.

Looks like it's starting to happen with some broadcasters. ESPN, ESPN America and the Discovery channels which have converted to widescreen all output widescreen 100% of the time, even with 4:3 or 14:9 (widescreen programming on Discovery from before they went widescreen was ARCed to 14:9) footage.

i was suprised to see this while watching the new series of bear grylis on discovery hd , but atleast i could change my tv settings to 16.9 and it didnt look stretched .

If your TV does allow you to zoom the picture, you'll loose the advantage of the HD picture as you're re-sizing the picture to cover a bigger area than it was designed to cover. Clarity will be lost to some degree.

so most channels run native 4;3 some run 16;9 and now there are 21:9 ?? it should all be one size i would expect most people have widescreen 16;9 tvs i can live with the borders but would get a much better viewing experience without them

as passingbat says my tv does zoom but its zooming things that are all ready being streatched from 4.3 to 16.9 that leaves them unwatchable ie gold and other stations playing old reruns

No there are just 4:3 and 16:9 channels. The 21:9 TV just zooms and crops letterboxes pictures to fill the screen, the same as using the zoom mode on a normal widescreen TV with a letterboxes image.

If 4:3 programmes are being stretched to 16:9 then you probably have your STB set to 720 Wide or 1080 Wide. Changing to 720 or 1080 will prevent this and correctly frame 4:3 content within vertical bars.
