I loved Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez if only for the fact that this was the first TV duo who showed that women could be as funny or funnier than their male counterparts..

Or then again there was Burns & Allen Maggy, now we are really digging them up, forgive the pun.

Yes there were some good US comedy acts. But my point was before Lucille Ball there were not many funny ladies apart from the legendary Mae West.Even after Lucille there were very few.

Normally, the accepted definition is two people who perform a series of funny sketches or jokes either on TV or on stage. Traditionally, they take the form of one funny person and one who isn't funny (the so called "straight" man) who is often the butt of the funny person's jokes.
E.g., in Morcombe and Wise, Eric Morcombe was the funny man, and Ernie Wise the straight man.
Not all acts follow that format. Vic and Bob don't. The Two Ronnies did (to some extent), as they were both funny (I liked some of Ronnie Corbet's monologues for instance) but Ronnie Barker was always the funnier of the two.
While they are funny in Red Dwarf (and both are funny in other things) Chris Barrie and Craig Charles don't fit in with that definition (to my mind) because they aren't comedians as such. They are comedy actors.
People do sometimes get the two mixed up. For instance, Catherine Tate is often called a comedienne. She says she isn't, she is an actress who is known for playing comedy roles.

Not to mention Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis, but I wasn't a fan of their style of comedy.

Calm down dear, it's just a commercial (a.k.a silly season press release).
Seesaw.com's user base is a bit self-selecting; I don't imagine that many of them have even heard of Eric and Ernie.

Stephen Fry & Alan Davies if you wish to be slightly 21st Century.
However I am surprised it wasn't Matt Lucas & David Walliams (cant stand them myself).

Re: And the greatest TV Comedy double act ever is..
Hated James Corden at first, but he has won me over slowly as a lone comedian, Horne & Corden is *****, their film was *****, Gavin & Stacey is sh...well, you get the picture.
Don't know if they're a true definition of a comedy double act, but surely Del Boy & Rodders have got to get a mention?? ABsolutely hilarious.
