Need advice on moving modem to a different room

Hi,

i came across this site from google and did a bit of searching on this topic but i still have some unanswered questions.

i basically want to run a coaxial cable from the white box on the wall from one room through the loft into another room. Overall the length will probably be around 10 metres.

what i was wondering is will there be signal loss because of the distance even if i buy a good quality cable and connectors? would it be better to run 4 cat 5e cables to the other room instead for the devices? (i am not a fan of wireless and also this would mean my cable box would have to stay in old room)

any help would be much appreciated, thanks

I'd run cat5 instead of trying to move the modem
Adding a length of coax could mess with your signal levels and effect your connection and possibly others in the street (from what i've read on here) whereas if you use cat5 its just a case of plug it in and all done

Just go on Ebay and buy a length of Cat5 to the size required and leave the modem where it is, just click HERE.

You can buy longer lengths if you want a bit of leeway.

If you move the modem and cock it up then you would be liable to pay for the visit to fix it. Stick to Cat5.

That would be a lot more expensive as a solution though compared to a ethernet cable run through the loft space.

If it was downstairs though a good call.

thanks for the replies.

if i was to use the cat 5 cables which would be the best way to do it without having any affect on my speeds

option 1: run one long cat 5 cable from modem from room 1 into room 2 and then connect to router

option 2: keep router in room 1 and run 3 or 4 cat 5 cables to room 2

one of the comments iam unsure about is you said that extending the coax will affect others in my area. in what way does it affect them?

[SEPH]: Any RF noise picked up on the coax is potentially propagated right up to the optical node.

Don't use CAT5. Use CAT6. If you're going to go to the trouble of laying cable through the loft you may as well make it CAT6 to meet the standard for gigabit networking now to future proof it a little. You will want it when 100meg+ speeds are more normal. Remember how quickly computer stuff moves.
