Not sure how much of a percentage most is but I'd guess that VM would be the winners if even a small percentage of the theives had to start paying for the service.

Overall I'd expect Sky to be the biggest winners. Some of the thieves will be used to Pay TV, and particulary the Premium Sports, so Sky will be getting the subs either way.
Whether they get used to it or not, I doubt they are suddenly going to pay for the full package on Sky just because they can no longer get it for free on Virgin.

And lets be honest, the main reason most Cable TV freeloaders pay for even a basic subscription is so they can ensure some engineer working in the cabinet doesn't unplug their cable because his PDA is telling him it's not used. Sky don't have that protection. You crack Sky's encryption, you have access to their services that no one can remove.

Not saying that I condone it at all, I happily pay for my V+ service but thinking Nagra 3 will prevent chipped boxes is just incorrect. The current boxes may stop working but I give it 3-6 months tops after full nationwide rollout that a new box is available.
I wish I had a pound for every time I had read N3 had been cracked. I wouldn't take any bets on it being cracked in three months either. It's been around a while and it's still secure and it is a far more advanced encryption system than N1 and N2. I will stick my neck out and say that the encryption variant VM use will still not be cracked in three years let alone three months.

I reckon they will ass crack N3 in 4 or 5 or 6 or 7 or 13 years.

You'd think if someone was stealing cable for all those years when the time did come to pay you'd go with virgin to give them something back

I suspect a thief with a conscience is a concept of mythology.

There's a few I know who will pay and they can well afford it. They're used to having their mates round to watch the footy on the 50" TV (the one they bought off a guy in the pub - no questions asked ) They're used to being able to dispatch their kids to their bedrooms to watch TV. The kids aren't going to take kindly to freeview so they'll have to pay for multiple boxes too.

No.

I've got a fairly diverse sense of humour but you'll have to explain the "LOL" to me.... or is it a humorous attempt to distinguish different types of dishonesty.

Yeah I had 2 chipped boxes for over three years. Now I've gone legit and subscribed for sky sports and movies, xl tv etc. Before I was just on the min sub £11 a month.

When you've had all those channels you get used to having them, be hard to go back to freeview.

I used to have full sub before, then a mate got me a chipped box. It saved money, so made sense.

Virgin Media and Sky are luxuries... if you can't afford them or the higher packages then you go without. Simples.

It's not that I couldn't afford it, I've got it now. It's just people love free things.

Re: All Chipped Cable Boxes Going Down

Side issue - did you not find that the quality on the dodgy boxes was *horrible*? I saw one plugged into a friend-of-a-friend's plasma and it was utterly rank. No way I'd watch it on a 32", let alone a 46". Plus your sig seems to indicate you care about AV quality about as much as I do...

I know 2 people with those starview boxes and the picture on both is absolutely horrendous, just plain crap tbh. Reminds me of the days of trying to watch a video after a dodgy VCR had "munched" on it.

I know more than 2, I've seen two set ups. Think Vm would pay me to snitch?

good or bad, it simply won't be a picture for long.. Unless you like watching films showing bats in a blacked out cave with no lights

I had the Eurovox HD box picture was awesome.

Yes I love AV.

I'd just like to say it's not that bad having a dodgy box its just people like having things for free. I payed for top package before dodgy box and then went to £11 min sub when I had dodgy box. Now I've got the top package again, even know my dodgy box is still working.
