Thing is, they've already got around Nagra 3 in Germany for Sky so when the need is there someone will bring out a "chipped" box for the UK market. If people want to hack something and use it for free then they will.
Not saying that I condone it at all, I happily pay for my V+ service but thinking Nagra 3 will prevent chipped boxes is just incorrect. The current boxes may stop working but I give it 3-6 months tops after full nationwide rollout that a new box is available.

Is there a link available so say nagra 3 has been cracked in germany? as far as i knew it had not yet been cracked anywhere, anyhow as far as i know vm are not just relying on nagra 3 alone,i thought the encryption vm are changing to is a nagra 3 variant, although i have no proof that is the case.

The are plenty of these stories around and apart from card sharing it is just fairy stories because if it had happened then the USA would have it cracked as well.

Believe what you want but the are plenty of thieves out there that have lost their stolen services because of the rollout by Virginmedia and many of the sellers are desperate to unload their stock before it all goes belly up.

I rather doubt that any crack will suddenly appear just because the UK has got NAGRA3 as we are only a small player in a large pond with regards to Digital Television.

Already proved wrong when exactly the same thing was said about Nagra3 for the D+ sats, all the dodgy sat/CAM dealers were saying that it would be weeks and then we'll be back up and running.. 3 years later and Nagra3 is going strong along with many more sat/cable suppliers now using it. In fact VM is one of the last to use an older system with a few still using the latest Videoguard (Sky NDS system) that has also been strong for a long long time...

Re: All Chipped Cable Boxes Going Down

I got a Taxi home from Glasgow airport last night. The taxi driverwas telling me that VM have shot themself in the foot as most of his fellow taxi drivers that had dodgey boxes are now signing up for Sky.

Not sure how much of a percentage most is but I'd guess that VM would be the winners if even a small percentage of the theives had to start paying for the service.

Overall I'd expect Sky to be the biggest winners. Some of the thieves will be used to Pay TV, and particulary the Premium Sports, so Sky will be getting the subs either way.

Nagra 3 in Germany will be a total different variant than the one in the uk. Plus its not hacked in Germany.

I believe the take-up rate of "new" VM subs is good, so both Sky and VM will be winners.

I agree. I believe that VM don't actually make much money out of the Sky sports and movies package though. Those thieves that can afford the premium channels (most in my experience) will be contributing to Sky for those whether they get a legit subscription for VM or Sky.

Re: All Chipped Cable Boxes Going Down

I had a friend who had V+ and a normal box with everything, and the only thing he used his naughty box for were the PPV like boxing or wrestling.
