Photo display difference between IE8 & Firefox

I've noticed that there is a big difference in the quality of the image displayed between IE8 and Firefox on my computer. The IE8 image is closer to the original, the Firefox image is coarser. Is this a general problem or just me.

The full image is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/deltawhiskey/4793844614/

The firefox image has a green tinge on the edge of the cloud, it is there on both Firefox 3.6.6 and the beta of 4.0.

These are screengrabs taken with PrtSc.

Re: Photo display difference between IE8 & Firefox

probably down to the ICM profiles - do you save images with them embedded? I know safari is ICM aware, but can't speak for IE8 or FF. might be worth checking their FAQs

No I've only given them any thought when printing. I don't recall Firefox being that bad, I wonder if it's something that's happened lately.

Re: Photo display difference between IE8 & Firefox

The full size image looks identical in both FF and IE8 on my system.

Interesting, I was wondering if it was something local to my computer as no one has mentioned a similar problem.

Re: Photo display difference between IE8 & Firefox

I cannot see the difference both in Firefox 3.6.6 and in IE8.

In both browsers, the ff image doesn't show the green tinge and the ie8 image looks clean...

So I don't quite know what's causing the problem but I can't see that it is a browser problem and yet logic dictates it must be...

Re: Photo display difference between IE8 & Firefox

I had no difference between IE(7) and FF 3.6.6 at full size. Looks like as the image is getting smaller, FF is compressing it more (hence losing data).

Re: Photo display difference between IE8 & Firefox

No even looking side by side I see no difference between the two.

Weird! Some us of see no difference, others see a clear difference.

So is it browsers,image size,graphics card,monitor?

The only difference I can see is in the two images that DW supplied as uploads to CF.

Baffling!

I thought it might be the compression myself, so have done a full size comparison and they still look very different (have focused in on the salmon colored house as it shows the color difference the most)

(screen = 1920*1080 hence I couldn't get the full image on without resizing)

Re: Photo display difference between IE8 & Firefox

Let's see if we can narrow it down a bit. I'm running Win 7 on a nVidia 9600GT graphics card, BenQ 24inch monitor, Firefox 3.6.6. and IE8

1. IE8 doesn't do color management
2. Firefox 3.5 has it turned on by default now. Previous 3 version had it off by default.

Re: Photo display difference between IE8 & Firefox

Great link there Kymmy. I turned off gfx.color_management.mode and now Firefox shows it without the green cast.

about:config >Filter:GFX > gfx.color_management.mode

The default is 2, I set it to 0
