Simple reason is that 8 hours a day staring at a screen with a white background is like staring at a lightbulb all day - it's not good for your eyes.

From a coding side I totally agree, I remember the old paper white VT monitors at DEC which were a real pleasure to stare at all day.

Not many though read the forum for 8 hours a day.. Those who do should really get back to work

Well the majority of applications these days use a white background such as Word, Excel, etc.

It's really not good for your health.
