That's going to be an ever increasing trend once everywhere is n3. You'll soon find all the public servers going down because they're so easy to track.
Foreign based ones will probably stay around, but the digital economy bill makes it trivial to force ISPs to block access to them (and VM could easily just null route them anyway, and most people getting free tv are probably getting free internet too).
Cardsharing isn't going to be public for all too long, it won't take much until it's pushed back underground (unless someone develops a truely p2p cardsharing sharing system...)

Reading some of the VM CS related posts on the Dark Side has been interesting in that the common consensus seems to be that people now more wary about getting ripped off. Having to buy new kit and then paying a years money up front to a dodgy CS set up that can not be held accountable in any way if they fail to deliver seems to be a step to far for people who previously felt more in control of their thievery as they only had to hand over a few quid to the 'guy in the pub'.

Re: All Chipped Cable Boxes Going Down
The forums dedicated to stealing cable are reporting that one of the servers that has been setup to allow a form of sharing has been raided. Couple of quotes below
Quote:
upc and police raided the premises of a box distributor in dublin who had the ********* server at his house on behalf of ****** satellite. the police and upc in a joint sting raided the premises & arrested several people & the ******* server was taken also.
|
It was a cable server not Sat
Quote:
once upc have put the server on there own network, they will be able to see all the ip addresses & mac addresses that are connecting to the server. i bet 95% are using upc broadband also.
|
This shows that the servers can and will be found and shut down. This has happened very quickly which shows that the system is not safe for the thieving gits
Now lets see more of these raids happening

Re: All Chipped Cable Boxes Going Down
It will be interesting to see what action is taken regarding the IP addresses & MAC addresses that are harvested as a result of the seizure of this server.

Indeed
And if they send the servers aboard it does not take the brains of a Arch Bishop to track them and get them shut down by the isp who's network they are working on.

In theory.
In practice though it requires the co-operation of the country that it's hosted in, and just ask the MPAA and RIAA how co-operative other countries are at shutting down copyright infringing services. There are many countries that just sit there and stick two fingers up at the requests and let them carry on regardless. It'll take an extensive court battle to get some countries ISPs to take a site offline (just look at the pirate bay) and by then there will simply be another in it's place.
This is why the DE bill has the potential to enforce site blocking, so we can just get UK isps to block access to the sites without having to go through the hoops of getting them shut down.

Parts of that bill get my vote
You could also see attacks against the servers from anonymous sources as well

Now there's an idea. Somewhere that the hackers could play and get a thumbs-up for a change?

Re: All Chipped Cable Boxes Going Down
I find myself wondering if something similar to the IWF proxy could be set up to deal with known card sharing servers.
That it would immediately identify those using them is, of course, purely a bonus
If anyone wants technical details on this happy to provide, else I'm sure those in the know already know how the Cleanfeed box works
EDIT: This does of course assume it's not already in place. Could be automatic and effortless actually, all scripted and based on parsing packet captures.
2nd EDIT: No it can't, legal reasons.

It's not and never has been clear-cut that the Piratebay does anything illegal, except allowing newbies to get themselves sued but that's a question of morality and not legality. Even in the UK you just have to look at what happened to Oink (administrator was found not guilty, others a slap on the wrists). Many countries take direct pay-tv theft much more seriously, mainly due to EU legislation but also self-interest since many of the major PAY TV operators have government involvement.
Cardsharing servers really need to be as local as possible, the same country preferably to work with any kind of reliability. This is certainly true of newer encryptions, older versions had a lot more leeway in terms of latency. I'm going to assume N3 was designed with defeating card sharing in mind, especially long range and if the servers are on British soil, prosecution should be straightforward.
