Re: email change advised from virgin?

Well, I've tried to change it both using the programme & manually. It doesn't work. Ntlworld settings are still working fine though.

I'm using MS Outlook, which I gather there maybe a problem with. A radical idea, but maybe they should have tested this first ?

I can't find the list of email clients that VM "support", but I seem to remember MS Outlook is not on it. Of course they can't be expected to know about, have installed, test and so "support" every client program that exists, but Outlook is a surprising omission.

Edit: found it http://help.virginmedia.com/system/s...ice.controller.

Outlook is not supported as it is part of a software package that does not come pre installed with your operating system and is also classed as a business tool, so out of our Support Scope and both counts.

Re: email change advised from virgin?

Problem I had when I changed my settings (outlook express) avast said it could not do a virus scan on incoming emails with SSL ticked, when I unticked it, I couldn't connect to download.

So my question is does Google mail do a virus scan before I receive my emails?

I don't suppose the number of customers using Outlook has any influence? And Thunderbird is supported?

No neither are supported as both are not part of your operating system and therefore have to be installed.

The is setup advice in the Help section for both of these but no phone support just click HERE

They are both easy to use and I use Thunderbird on Linux.

Re: email change advised from virgin?

Looks like I'll be sticking with ntlworld settings & MS Outlook, it still works. I have got Outlook Express but the junk email filters on MS Outlook work very well.

I'd guess many will use Outlook as you can buy MS Office software cheap via a work licences, and lots do so. Think Virgin have miscalculated here. Don't see why we should have to change my email software just because Virgin can't work out/be bothered to properly support customers.

My post above advises that we do not support 3rd party software, so not a question of being bothered about it, but more about not being within our Support Scope.

the are sections within the help section with setup advice for Outlook.

This is easily fixed, open Avast 5, on the left, click real-time shields, mail shield, on the right, click expert settings then select SSL Accounts, then click Add.

Input these and it should scan incoming mail fine.

For IMAP use these.

Host Name - imap.virginmedia.com
Protocol - IMAP
Port - 993
Encryption - SSL

For POP3 use these.

Host Name - pop3.virginmedia.com
Protocol - POP3
Port - 995
Encryption - SSL

And for outgoing mail use this for POP3 or IMAP

Click add again and add this.

Host Name - smtp.virginmedia.com
Protocol - SMTP
Port - 465
Encryption - SSL

Re: email change advised from virgin?

Masque old chap - I have received said email and am embracing whole-heartedly the move to the Googleness, so set about doing what it tells me to in Thunderbird.
I tried the port change and all failed. Reverting back to ports 25 and 110 and all's well again.
Am I to presume I need to wait until all fails before I make the change?
No biggie, just wanted to know best course of action.
Thank-you kindly.

If you have been migrated it should just work, my @blueyonder.co.uk account works fine with the new settings.

How do I check my e-mail settings in Thunderbird?

How do I set up Thunderbird?
