Since its incorporation just over five years ago, Facebook has undergone a remarkable transformation. When it started, it was a private space for communication with a group of your choice. Soon, it transformed into a platform where much of your information is public by default. Today, it has become a platform where you have no choice but to make certain information public, and this public information may be shared by Facebook with its partner websites and used to target ads.

To help illustrate Facebook's shift away from privacy, we have highlighted some excerpts from Facebook's privacy policies over the years. Watch closely as your privacy disappears, one small change at a time! [more]

Re: Facebooks Eroding Privacy Policy: A Timeline

Um...is there actually a problem here at all? Firstly their privacy policy has adapted to how FB is used these days - people are willing to share more information than when it started.

Secondly if you don't want the whole world knowing your stuff - don't put it on the internet.

Re: Facebooks Eroding Privacy Policy: A Timeline

Knowing how to use FB's privacy settings and limiting the information you put on FB is key to all this.

People must take on some responsibility for their own privacy. Instead, they put their entire life on line and expects the hosting organisation to do it for them automatically.

Quote:
The default privacy setting for certain types of information you post on Facebook is set to “everyone.”
So just change the default

Hence I don't use facebook. That and the fact I still speak to the people I want to speak to! Facebook seems to be there so that those who you didn't really like at school can be added to a 'friends' list (though 'people I have spoken to at some point in my life' might be a more apt name for it) and you can compare lives to see who os deemed more successful! I just don't get facebook. If I want to talk to someone, I'll phone them or meet up. Most people lose contact and stop talking for a reason - one of them doesn't want to talk to the other anymore!

Judging by some of your recent posts, you appear to have a problem with facebook.

If anyone shares info on facebook (or ANY social networking place) and doesn't check the privacy controls, then they should expect to see their info published.

The solution is simple. If you want to publish stuff on facebook (or any social networking site), but don't want the world to read your info, check (and if necessary set) the privacy controls. Otherwise, don't put the info on the site in the first place.

Re: Facebooks Eroding Privacy Policy: A Timeline

the problem is they have changed privacy controls making it hard to keep track often of what you have to do to keep what you want private while still being able to use a very useful tool to many

I just googled Dude111 and got some REALLY interesting results.

it ,does however tell us that you have started this topic AND you're "online privacy" thread on the first 4 sites that show in a veeeery big list of sites you are a member ,and basically you get the same answer on them all ,which is ,don't use the internet if you want privacy and don't want your details on the net ...it also tells us how paranoid the Americans have become

But it wouldn't stop someone more savvy than me from finding out..After all I'm known to be the least techy and webwise of the Mods here and even I know that the more you expose yourself on the net the more you reveal.

Hmm! I bet the above will MLMs attention.

The answer is simple. Learn the changed controls. Or ask Facebook to remove your account.
