Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)
Are Discovery on 212 & Discovery HD on 214 going to be always diferent, or will they do a simulcast?

Likely they will stay different for a while. Discovery HD, NatGeo HD and BBC HD are all 'showcase' HD channels in that they only show HD version of programmes picked from their parent channels

Would it be safe to assume that the vast majority of content shown on Discovery and National Geographic was originally filmed in (some sort of) High Definition? Perhaps less so with History due to heavy the use of archive footage.
If so, the likelihood would surely be that their HD channels will ultimately become simulcasts. On the other hand, perhaps that will only happen when there are no more SD broadcasts.

It's a good policy to only broadcast 100% HD on a HD channel.

Unless its a new programme that uses archive footage that predates it.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)
I have always believe to make a ' positive ' argument regarding VM, but l must say, that this spending millions on advertising VM, is not a worthwhile waste of money.
The only way that VM are going to get more customers is to introduce more channels, especially HD channels to the network, it is ok for VM saying we do have 'ON DEMAND', but to get more customers, they must introduce more channels, and just +1 channels, as all these are is a repeat of the original.
VM is a broadcastor, but it must try and get in line in Sky, otherwise they will be second best.

Even archive footage looks better in HD!
(Not better than it did in the first place, of course, but better than it would if it were recompressed into SD.)

Maybe the Advertising is just the beginning of more announcements coming? who knows. I am sure VM wouldn't be spending more money than it did last year on advertising if it were not committed in following it up with more SD/HD channels.

But Sky2 will still have up to SIX hours of broadcasting on it own.
From Monday Sky2 will be as listed here:
6am - 6pm (Sky1 +1)
6pm - 12midnight (Sky2)
12am - 6am (Sky1 +1).

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)
MB or maybe DF, I am by no means an avid sports fan but something has been niggling away at me.
When we get the Sky sports 1 & 2 HD is there anything to stop Sky moving certain programmes traditionally shown on Sky Sports 1 & 2 on to Sky Sports 3 & 4? Sky wouldn't do anything thing sneaky like moving certain football matches away from the HD channels we are scheduled to get would they?

I think that in the OFCOM report that they brought up this question and that they said that if this happened that they would look in to adding these channels to the list aswell . Will try and find the quote for it ?
