When to install new AV?
I have a netbook that come with 60 days of McAfee, what is the best free AV to install, is it the Microsoft one? Also do I uninstall McAfee first and then install the new one? How do I do this part, which first?
Thanks

Re: When to install new AV?
AVG.Avast,Comodo,MSE, they are all good just download the one you want then, disconnect from internet, then uninstall McAfee by going to control panel and add or remove programs, once thats done install your new AV software and then connect to the internet and update the AV software if need be.

Re: When to install new AV?
For a free one, Avast is great.
For a great paid one which to be honest isnt that expensive, I'd reccomend ESET Nod32 which is very low on system resources and is used by quite a few members here.
You will need to uninstall the other Mcafee antivirus as running both would cause problems.

Always also worth taking a System Restore Point in case you need it at this point

MSE = Microsoft Security Essentials
Make sure you've got whatever you decide to use dowloaded and ready to roll.
Disconnect from the internet, either switch off your cable modem or router, or more simply just pull out the ethernet cable from the computer
Uninstall McAfee
Install your chosen anti virus, and then re-connect to the internet when it ask if you want it to update during install(most AV installs do this), or alternatively, run through the install, don't update anything and reconnect to the internet once the new AV is installed, then go and update the new AV manually.

When you click on the download link it'll give you an option to save or run, select the save option.
When the download is finished, you'll get options to close or open, select close.
The when it comes to installing the new AV, all you need to do is to double click the file that you downloaded.

Re: When to install new AV?
Before uninstalling Mcafee it may be worth having a read through this document/advise http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507
Good Luck.

Re: When to install new AV?
Finally done stage 1 & 2 (remove Mcafee and install MSE)
Stage 3 is use the McAfee removal tool on their website. Tried it twice it just says Preparing to remove products and nothing happens to the status bar. The software downloads OK, when run it just seems to stick. Left for an hour with no change. Any ideas?
Thanks

Re: When to install new AV?
Are you running MCPR.exe as Administrator if using Vista/7? (right click, Run as Administrator)

Re: When to install new AV?
Try running it while in Safe Mode (F8 at Boot). Also after a Re-Boot if you try to run it again does it say Clean up is allready running?
