What about their fans? Not using players because they are not playing well is one thing, but not using them because they will receive a bonus or an extension to their contract is harming the team selection and possibly stopping Pompey putting out their best possible team.

Oh I'm sure there will be all sorts of excuses trotted out as to why players can't play in PL fixtures..... but miraculously they will be available for a cup final.

Being a disapointed Villa fan I am wondering if seventh would now quallify for Europe...

Don't quote me on this, but as far as i'm aware, it will.
5th - Standard Europa League place.
6th - League Cup as Man United will be in the CL.
7th - FA Cup as Chelsea will be in the CL and Pompey don't have a UEFA license to play in Europe next season.
Then there's possibly a fair play table place. Currently Arsenal are leading, Tottenham are 2nd, and Fulham are 3rd. The first 2 will almost certainly be in Europe anyway, so Fulham would qualify that way. Unless Fulham win the Europa League then........................Burnley are the next highest club who haven't already qualified for Europe.
To be honest though, why would a Villa fan care about qualifying for the Europa League? Your manager doesn't care about the competition and puts out weakened teams in order to concentrate on the league. 7th spot would be wasted on Villa.

Totally agree and some would say that fourth spot was always out of reach.
However, two good (and exciting) cup runs (Reading and Crystal Palace to name two games) and every possibility of improving on last seasons 62 points (9 from the last 18 available?).
The problem being is that the squad seems to get to around mid March and then fizzles out.
It's going to be interesting to see how the summer pans out.

Re: Football : Season 2009/2010
Its typical of Wiley to give silly decisions, and its not just sour grapes, the ground was very poor and was cutting up badly, and some of the decisions that Wiley was making were bad, Spurs should have had a penalty when the ball clearly touched the Pompey players hand, and then on the disallowed goal, that was a very bad decision.
All l hope now is that Spurs get into Europe, BUT, as l have said before, Officials have to go back to training school, Its like Aston Villa, the ref, bottled it on the nasty John Terry foul, Terry does it all the time and gets away with.

Southampton - FA Cup winners 1976 - not promoted from the old Second division until end of 1977/78 season.

Spurs v Portsmouth
Yes there were bad decisions by officials and the pitch was shocking but if a team have 20 odd shots and still don't score in 2 hours of football then they do not deserve to win.
And I'm a Spurs fan!

Re: Football : Season 2009/2010
What a damn cheek Portsmouth have, first of all they permission to sell players outside the deadline, and now they wanty special permission to get a licence to play in Europe, they went into Admin, becuase they have serious debt and couldn't control it, There are other clubs in a debt problem, you cannot have one rule for them and one rule for others.
And as for Tottenhams performance, the chances that Crouch had, he should have been taken off early, and Defoe should not have played, he has just come back from injury and wasn't macth fit, Harry should have had Pav and Gerjosen on to start, they would have put the chances away.
Will Spurs get into Europe, l don't know now, they have Arsenal, Chesea and United and they are three tough games. And we are now chasing City.

Re: Football : Season 2009/2010
That was some strike by Rose, although i thought Almunia could have done better.
Come on Spurs! (For tonight, Saturday, but not the week after )

*Grumble* Good goal though. Think Spurs might win this to be honest, Unless Arsenal stop messing around on the outskirts of the box, where's the final ball already.

Aghh. Well Gomez was awesome in the last 10 mins.

And why did Arsenal come back the life in those 10 mins. How we missed Van Persie.

Re: Football : Season 2009/2010
What a game.
And a 19 and a 20 year old have scored against 2 centre backs with a combined age of 69. So its not just Arsenal that put kids in their teams
I think Bale's goal is the best part about tonight. He's done so well for us lately with amazing performances, so many assists and decent crosses. He deserves a goal for all he's done.
COYS!

Re: Football : Season 2009/2010
It was bound to happen sooner or later. Not looking forward to work tomorrow, Spud fans everywhere.
On the plus side, Sol Campbell was immense and Van Persie was brilliant. Oh what could have been!
