lets make it easy if my broadband is 50Mb what speed should i be looking for when downloading from usenet in Kb/s?

Also does it matter how many connection i have, my maximum is 20 but would it matter if i changed that to say 10 or lower?

1024Bytes = 1KByte
1024KBytes = 1Megabyte.

50Mb = 50,000Kb = 6,250KB = 6.25MB

As far as how many connections use as few as you can get away with to achieve the speed you want

I can use SSL with Astra, on port 563. Are you using the correct server address (the secure ones are different to the unsecure)?

All SSL does is http://webopedia.com/TERM/S/SSL.html so it does have a benefit, it stops or attempts to stop your ISP seeing what is in the payload you are downloading and therefore they [ISP] dont know what you are downloading. SSL does affect download speeds due to encryption\decryption but its really negligible.

Europe gives a lot less lag than the US servers, I can max out a 10Mb connection on 5 eu SSL connections
