changed domain name-servers, e-mail not getting through

Hello,
I have recently (Friday) changed the name-servers on a domain that I own so that they point to my new web host.
The problem is that any e-mails that I send from my ntlworld email account (using outlook) don't get to my domain e-mail accounts. They just vanish into thin air.
E-mails from other accounts (such as AOL, or web mail) get through no problem.

My web host seems to think this is because NTL haven't updated/flushed their DNS cache and so still sees my domain as being on the old name-servers.

Does anyone know how often (if ever) NTL update their DNS cache? Or if there is a way to ask them to do it?

DNS changes can take 72+ hours to complete.. If it's only ntl emails then you could be right in your guess but you should though get a bounceback somewhere along the line..

Yeah I'm hoping it's just a case of waiting a few days for it to sort itself. I've had a few people successfully send from non-NTL email accounts, but the two different NTL emails I've tried have just vanished without a trace. They send ok, and I get no error message or bouncebacks, but they don't appear at the receiving end.

My web host did a check for me, and found that emails I'd sent from NTL to a friend's domain that is hosted on the same server as mine did get received ok, so it does look as though the problem is only with NTL to MY domain, and as I have recently changed the name-servers then that looks like the likely cause.

Hopefully NTL refresh their DNS cache more than once a year.

When I recently was messing with changing DNS and mail server stuff I too found that ntl based DNS took a looooooong while to update. If your last webhosting name server settings had a long TTL setting (Time to Live) that might be a factor and you'd have to wait for that to update. I think the web standards normally say allow up to 48 hours for all changes, but most DNS will refresh much quicker than that, hence most people sending to your new email addy.

Would your old email server location still be capable of receiving emails sent to it's old DNS? If so that would explain your lack of bounce back errors.

Hi Rob,

Well I never actually had any old email servers as such. I had only registered the domain name with 123.reg a couple of months ago (with no hosting). Then last week I bought hosting from KDA Web Services.
I then changed the name-servers at 123.reg to point to my host.

I just received all the test messages I have sent over the last two days (all 18 of them

) at my new email server.
So it looks like NTL have resolved the issue (or it resolved itself). I guess it must have just been a case of waiting for the name-server change to propagate it's way across the web.

A lot of the time mail servers will keep trying to send messages for up to 48 hours. If they are delayed excessively the sender might get a warning of the delay, but that will depend on the mail server settings.
