vehicles waiting to be destroyed (scrappage scheme)
Quote:
Sitting nose to tail on a disused airstrip, these cars form a tiny part of the massive backlog of vehicles destined for the scrap heap.
The number standing idly on the runway has swelled to around 14,000 as mechanics struggle to cope with the popularity of the Government's scrappage scheme, which ended last week.

Almost all of the 400,000 vehicles sold through the scheme are still roadworthy and many could be driven for another five years, according to experts.
However, the vast collection --which includes a fine range of BMWs, Volvos and Peugeots - must be destroyed under the scheme's rules.

These are meant to be old bangers. what a waste.

That sickens me, a lot of the cars in that pile are a lot newer and in better condition than my car

I predicted that.
I'm also chuffed that my hard-earned taxes have been used to help a load of other people buy new cars (that they would have bought anyway) while i'm struggling with a knackered old motor because a recession where people are losing jobs and not finding them isn't the best time to take on a large new loan.

I wonder how many find their way back on to the road via dodgy dealings?
I can't really see how this has benefitted British car manufacturers, figures show that most cars bought under the scheme were small & foreign, many of those being Korean. I believe Fiat also did well out of it. I expect the dealers & scrap men must be rubbing their hands though!

Noooo! There's a mauritius blue Xantia amongst that lot! I could do with it's O/S wing, and if it's got front fogs, it's bumper too!
Ironically, if it's a 1.9TD, it could run on vegetable oil and be a heck of a lot more environmentally friendly than they car it was scrapped to buy.

Very good point. However, the idea of the scrappage scheme was to inject life into the new car business. The extent of this government's concern with the environment stopped with the application of the "green tax".
