Re: Finally We All Might Get Good Internet?

.....???where did vm get the money for their f/o network......?????
i dont know the answer to this but i'm guessing either
1 own pockets/investment.
2 not from the tax payer.
why should any other provider get different, if they do, is it fair for vm to get some of the cash(back) too???

Would you really like to see VM being forced to relase their network to other ISP's as BT have been?

Re: Finally We All Might Get Good Internet?

Super fast broadband, if they try and do this it will be the biggest FURBAR in the world, just leave the net alone Brown, I can see the headlines no, million left without broadband because Labour can't afford the upgrade costs, or new TAX to pay for broadband upgrades.

Re: Finally We All Might Get Good Internet?

IT's not going to be superfast broadband it's only going to be 40Mb, I currently have 50Mb, and later this year VM are releasing 100Mb.

40Mbit is 'super fast', Ofcom appear to define it as anything above 24Mbit and I'm sure those who are presently unable to even get 10Mbit would probably agree regardless of what you personally may have.

And who is going to pay for this jet engine, you?

I'd have a look at just how much the Japanese government subsidises fibre in the country and see if you fancy some of that added to your tax bill, I personally don't.

As the Government's plans are *not* VM specific, I have moved this thread to a more appropriate forum.

I take your point, but don't you think they should just go in one big hit, and give all the major towns and citys BB which is on par with Japan and Korea? My reason for saying that is because the 40Mb isn't really that fast in the grand scheme of things and I don't believe it to be future proof, and as such in the future it will need to be upgraded once again therefore costing us even more money. You could be panny smart but pound stupid.

Thumbs down Re: Finally We All Might Get Good Internet?

BT was privatised in the 80's and due to their failings we have to bail them out with an additional tax to improve their broadband network

Cheers

totally not mate, what i mean is that vm paid for it themselves. political parties are now saying that they're gna give funding to folks like bt (pos from tv liscence fee) to pay for those networks to get updated......my point is that this is unfair to vm. if they are gna give them money, vm should get some too............................
but thinking on.............is a good or bad thing if the whole network was f/o and open to all suppliers, we're all customers/consumers and getting the best pos delivery to the highest number of people is surely a good thing eh???
peace.

Nothing in the bill that's BT specific at all. No failings involved either. The 50p is for non-urban areas to get faster Internet, these areas are unlikely to provide a return on investment. No failings just those are the numbers.

50% of the 40Mbit investment BT are doing will be reusable for fibre to the home.

The best thing the government can do is remove legislative barriers and give some more guidance to local authorities to allow these networks to be built.

Sadly we won't be on a par with Japan / Korea - they have aerial fibre which is something that's not really an option in many places in the UK and would raise moans from people in others (while they complain about their lack of high speed Internet at the same time of course).

There's a few reasons but mostly the government is the problem, not the solution, in the urban areas.
