Can't send messages from Outlook (SMTP)
Last week for no reason at all, I have lost the ability to send emails.
I am using NTLWorld and MS outlook and I can still recieve emails and I can still send and recieve using NTL webmail, just not on outlook (or express or MS Mail).
I have checked my settings and they are all right, I have set up my account on combinations of 3 different machines using XP, Vista and Windows 7. I have tried Outlook, Windows mail and Outlook express. I have tried using different connections including wireless, Dongles and Hardwire and setting the account up on other peoples machines (that work), but still no success.
I have wiped the account and set up again - but guess what - still nothing
I have been reduced to ringing 151 several time who proved of little us apart from confirming my settings were right. However they did suggest that because I can still use NTL Webmail then there is nothing wrong at their end.
Given the combinations of things I have tried I strongly suspect that the problem is at their end.
I have looked through this very useful forum and other people seem to have experienenced similar problems but their solutions do not appear to work for me.
Does any one have any other ideas, normally I would just bin NTL as I have no particular loyalty to them - however as a small business user I have a email address which I do not want to change.
Can anyone help
Kind Regards

Re: Can't send messages from Outlook (SMTP)
If your email has been migrated to Google, smtp port is 465, SSL enabled. POP is port 995, SSL enabled. It differs from the old platform, port 25 and 110 non SSL.

NTL have not been migrated and even when they are the should be no need to change port numbers as with the Blueyonder accounts.
Email help can be found here with setup instructions for Outlook 2007

Re: Can't send messages from Outlook (SMTP)
Oddly enough, from this page:
Quote:
Check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL) under Outgoing Mail (SMTP).
Enter 465 in the Outgoing mail (SMTP): field.
Under Outgoing Mail (SMTP), check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
Under Incoming mail (POP3), check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL). The port will change to 995.

So why does it say that?

As yet the are no changes to the port numbers for @ntlworld.com or @blueyonder.co.uk accounts as we still use 25 and 110 and do not tick the SSL boxes,
If we changed the ports to 465 and 995 then those accounts would not work.
I love it when they put the wrong advice on the help pages and will have to report it.

Re: Can't send messages from Outlook (SMTP)
The help article is correct.
Old account settings will continue to work for the next few months but we recommend you start using the new settings as soon as possible.
We will be in touch in the next few months to let all customers know how to change to the new settings.

Re: Can't send messages from Outlook (SMTP)
Dear all
As suggested by danbayliss I reset everything to the Virgin Media setting as shown on the help site (I had done this previously and it had not worked) and this time it still didn't work, in fact it didn't send or receive. HOWEVER... in resetting back to my previous NTL settings (at least I would be able to receive emails) the pop3 setting stayed on 995 (the VM setting) and the SMTP setting was set to 25 (the NTL setting). Amazingly enough it now works - I have no clue why. Would this be islolated just to me or would others be affected by this???
Many thanks for all the replies and taking the time - much appreciated
Regards

Re: Can't send messages from Outlook (SMTP)
Hi Peter
The new settings will fully work for virgin.net, virginmedia.com & blueyonder.co.uk customers as the migrations have been completed for those customers.
We are still getting ready for the NTL migrations. The new settings work fine for POP3 & IMAP but the SMTP new settings won't work for another 2 weeks.
I will ask the content team to update the help article.
Thanks for the feedback

Re: Can't send messages from Outlook (SMTP)
At the moment I am just doing a Victor Meldrew impression.
The email that was fixed and working last night is now not working with exactly the same problem - I can't send....
Nothing has changed so grateful for any further suggestions.
Regards

Re: Can't send messages from Outlook (SMTP)
I just reinstalled Win 7, should have done a clean install in the first place instead of the upgrade perhaps. I had to reinstall Outlook and then tell it to set up a new account. The wizard went away, logged onto Virgin's server, found all the settings and voila. You could try creating a new account and seeing if it gets all the settings for you. It tried first with an encryped sign on but that didn't work so it fell back to unencrypted to get the settings.
Edit I'm on ntlworld btw
Oops. Reading the original post you seem to have done this, and more. If I ever find that different installs fail I start to look to see what *I* am doing wrong :-)
Once tried a few times to install mail, a long time ago, and then realised I was missing a . out of my mail address.
I'm sure this isn't your problem but anything is worth a check

Re: Can't send messages from Outlook (SMTP)
Try this, it worked for me
Change smtp to virginmedia.com, leave pop has ntlworld.com, change incoming port to 995 and outgoing to 465 tick "This server requires an encryped connect".
Best of luck
