In the pathping to verygames.de, you didn't reach the destination. I did when I tried it. We both get the Request Timed Out at the same place - this is due to the hop served from the VM interconnect (IC) is set to reject pings addressed to it, except in your case it doesn't seem to want to go past the hop #6 (which should be as per hop #8 in your tracert to the same site). So I'm not sure it can all be put down to the VM network on the face of the evidence. That said, 24 ms RTT with the VM core switch at Leicester is a contributing factor. My figure is 11 ms. This is a sign that either your VM CMTS is congested or the switch at the core that gets you onto the backbone is congested. I can't tell which; we can't see the CMTS in your network - we only see it on the Motorola BSR.

In the pathping to multiplay.co.uk, the evidence of congestion is clearer IMO. The RTT is 38 ms this time with the Leicester core switch; on my system it's 19 ms (it will always vary - such is the internet). My best tracert ping RTT direct to the game site was 12 ms , worst was 45 ms. My pathping average was 37 ms. I can see now that my core is also congested since the pathping average RTT is now 34 ms.

I think you've got a case to make for VM 2nd line support (via the support newsgroup) to investigate congestion at the Leicester hub.

HTH.

Re: Ping Jitter

Spoken too them and they replied with;

> Hi Nvc,
>
> Looks like the networks team are already on to this one, a ticket has been
> raised with the reference of 1168067.

After speaking with customer service reps for 2-3 hours today (transfered too and from around 8 employees who had no idea what the definition of a 'support ticket reference number' was) all i could get out of them was money debited to the account and an "ongoing, don't know when it will be fixed" response. They havn't even added this support ticket to the virgin media status page on their website which is quite frankly, typical.

For the giggles, i've added a server monitor screenshot of the ping spike issues for future reference, it's of a UK wireplay.co.uk server, and so the results are not as bad as those such as from Germany, where routing seems to also play a major factor;

Customers services won't have access to that ticket, probably assigned to 3rd line and or networks..

Re: Ping Jitter

Hey did you say there is congestion on the Leicester Hub? I've been having problems with huge pings and varying internet speeds (5-12Mb and i pay for 20Mb). Apparently there is some work going on at the Leicester hub due to the analogue being switched off. Hopefully they'll add some more capacity while they're at it!

Yeah apparantly, so you would hope they'd increase capacity indeed but nobody, including the "broadband specialist" over the phone, was able to give me any more detailed information.

If you fancy giving them a call for free on 150 (if you also have their phoneline), navigate to 'disconnection' and ask for a broadband specialist on the other end, perhaps you can get something out of them yourself, and if you give it a go, drop a reply on here and let me know the outcome mate.

Re: Ping Jitter

You'll get a more definative reply from the 2nd line support on the newsgroups who will be able to give you the fault/repair ticket number and expected resolution date.

Or what this guy said :P

I requested they address my newsgroup response again through adding a 4th reply, because the guys on the phone couldn't give me anything

Re: Ping Jitter

nvc - these tickets go to networks then to planning. If they have no further information they have no further information. It can take weeks or months for capacity upgrades to be planned and completed it's not just a case of flicking a switch.

In short don't waste your time spending 2 - 2.5 hours on the phone to customer support, you are far better off asking the newsgroup guys if there have been any updates to the ticket.

It's not on the service status page as that only addresses high priority issues affecting a large number of customers, annoying as it may be localised congestion is neither high priority nor does it affect large numbers of customers. The fault affecting you nvc probably involves no more than 100 customers or so.

Even in all of these where the average ping is low, it's the inconsistency
that is the issue, for example: hop 4 is virgin media:

Why is it fluctuating so much?

Hi NVC,

The traceroutes that you've displayed all seem to be coming back as we would
expect, you will occasionally get spikes in latency, and the spikes you've
posted by and large seem to be occurring outside the Virgin Media network.
As a result I do not see what we can do to provide you with lower latency
100% of the time.
I don't know what to do?

I can sort of understand what you're saying, but at the same time i have had
this unstable ping for months, now and then it gets considerably worse and
it's definitely an issue with my broadband connection because i these spikes
surely cannot be normal - the second tracert of postcode WS11 was stable and
that was also a virgin media connection, why is mine nothing like that? I'm
not expecting my latency to be lower, just to be stable and not fluctuate by
80ms.

Thanks

Re: Ping Jitter

We don't know anything about the WS11 traceroute. Time of day? What would repeated WS11 tracerts show? The internet varies from second to second, never mind minute to minute. Same in the VM network.

There are doubtless UK areas where performance differs - but you'd need to prove that WS11 was perfect at all times for your particular case to stand up.

The VM guys are right - in general your pings are poorer outside VM's network. This is where tracert is an inexact art. It's your gaming experience that's going wrong and the data that moves is very different from the tracert data.

I believe your attack needs to be based on a demand that VM lives up to its advertising or that they should stop advertising what they can't deliver and compensate you accordingly.

Re: Ping Jitter

Personally, I think this is a routing issue. All your pings are decent. As are your traceroutes. I think you need to provide more information, pings and traces throughout the day, 5 or so every hour from 9AM - 9PM

The VM guy is right, I am afraid, it goes off Network, the next step is to look at the gameserver providers, confirm their routing/kit etc etc..

Re: Ping Jitter

I can see from what has been posted it looks like its not virgin medias problem but i have this problem and it doesnt matter what server or what time of day the same thing happens. I also know others in other parts of the country who i play with that get perfectly stable ping on virgin media. Just seems to be a select few such as me and nvc.

Finally spoke to a helpful guy over the phone

- They say my line is oversubscribed
- peter traceroute postcode is on shepshed exchange, i'm on leicester exchange, despite being within 1 mile of eachother
- original upgrades were supposed to be completed in january
- reason they are taking so long is because it's upgrade of the entire network there or something
- ETA on completion: 22march
- speaking to a UK broadband specialist called 'Steve' on Monday 16th!

Perhaps i can squeeze something more out of him on Monday
