You should be getting around 5Mbps to match that 41Mb speed test above, very strange, that is saying around 12Mb.

Re: 50MB Questions

From 10 tests on speedtest i have:-

the ping is always 10m/s and the UL is always 1.60 but the DL goes from 41 to 26 up and down.

And I am now connected direct to the modem, with none of my equipment fitted.

Re: 50MB Questions

The may be an issue with the external cabling or something in the cabinet at the end of the road.

Bit of an odd one and I would have booked an engineer as well so right decision there.

Re: 50MB Questions

Ok thank you very much.

What's an acceptable speed though, I know with ADSL you never get what you pay for but my 10MB use to run around 8.5 - 9.8 most of the time, unless throttled!

As per my previous post when you said you were now getting 41Mb that is within parameters for an up to 50Mb service even though many get faster speeds, but yours is fluctuating so a reason needs to be found.

Re: 50MB Questions

Playing about with speedtest.net and this is weird, since I didnt think my TP Link router was compatible,

It wont maintain this speed though, and its now connected via the router Im getting no less than 36, still not right though me thinks.

Re: 50MB Questions

Hi Moldova,

Thanks for your help the other day, here is whats happened today,

Waited in for the guy to come, 2pm for an 8 til 12 appointment, bad start since I have lost an entire day from work.

All he did was run a TCP optimizer which does not seem to have done anything,

Best he could get on the Vmpilot site was 23 and you can see below what Im now getting on speedtest.net

He had a story that there is a problem in Withington, Manchester and I live in Stockport about 6 miles away. Apprently this invloves a person from Motorolla flying from Seattle to fix this.......sorry but I feel a little let down since he said there is no time scale on when this would be fixed.

Call back in 2 weeks........Ok, shall I not pay for it for the 3 weeks of bad service if it stays this way?

Sorry I'll add this too if it helps,

Re: 50MB Questions

eeeek..oh and Hi all

I am thinking of returning to VM as I can only get 5meg on my adsl due to the line quality, even though I am within 1 mile of my exchange and can get adsl+ but thats another story.

As I have said I am thinking of returning to VM, have been thinking about it for some time since they offered the 50meg service in my area of Winnersh Triangle.

After reading this story, is this a good idea? Anyone else in the same area as me willing to share experiences?

Good luck Dex, but if I were you I would refuse to pay.

Re: 50MB Questions

Yep its frustrating alright, I was kinda hoping the engineer would have connected something to it to make sure the feed to my property is ok, but hey.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Just remember that for every bad story you here on the internet there's probably 10 good stories, but no-one seems to think that the good stories are worth posting

I can share experience of the 20 Mbps service in Winnersh (off Robinhood Lane). The 20 & 50 Mbps customers share the same UBR on what is known as the "overlay network". I'm getting between 7 & 10 Mbps at this peak time on a single channel. You should do better on the three bonded channels you'll be provisioned with (IMO), but I doubt at peak times that you'll get 50 Mbps; maybe between 20 & 30 Mbps. I'm satisfied with the service.

The 10 Mbps users are on the legacy network and I've no idea how that performs.

The various area problems do not seem to afflict Winnersh, but peak time is peak time and you should bear this in mind.

Which BT exchange is 1 mile from you? I'm on Wokingham exchange and am lucky to get 1.5 Mbps on ADSL2+ (my backup service). Lest you worry, I'bve only had to kick in the ADSL service twice in the past year - once for a day once for an hour. VM reliability here over the years is excellent IMO. It needs to be because their after sales service on the telephone is Shcmitt.

HTH.

Re: 50MB Questions

I am having 50 meg installed in feb. When it gets installed i will be running a speed test and if its not over 40 meg i won't be signing the new contract simple as that.

Re: 50MB Questions

Dont think you have a choice, I think the fact you have it installed indicates your in agreement with the contract. Mine will not run over 25 and it seems no one on here knows what to do or say, but hey I'll wait 2 weeks then see how it is.

Your right there are good stories but people mainly turn to forums for help and advice,

I have 3, yes 3 Virgin mobile contracts and all are fine no problems, no issues with coverage and the price is fantastic.

I have a Virgin home phone, again no problems.

I have Virgin V+ XL TV with extra's, guess what.... no problem good price and no issues,

HAD Virgin 10MB with no problems on speed and no down time EVER,

Upgraded to 50MB and UL sits at 1.6, ping at 10m/s - 50m/s but I feel a bit short changed that it wont run at 50MB,

So there’s your good story I’m very happy with VM but I expect to get what I pay for, you do the maths and guesstimate what I pay them each month & I imagine you'd feel the same.

If there’s a good story VM thread I'll gladly add my comments but please don’t just add an irrelevant comment on a thread when someone is asking for advice.

Another good story. I'm very satisfied with my service.

But disgusted with what I read in some cases on the forums. And remember, that in areas cases that have dragged on for months, one bad story covers possibly thousands of bad stories (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Plymouth, Exter, Bristol, Leeds, East London, Belfast ......).
