Espn HD

Sat down last night to watch the EVERTON game on espnHD. after turning the volume up because on virgin HD channels the volume is always LOWER than normal SD channels.
The picture quality was very good ' that is when there was a picture' Both picture and sound went off, about 20seconds later picture and sound returned, the game kicked off, then a few minutes into the game same thing happened again, changed channels over to the SD transmission so i could watch the game with sound and vision.
Good old virginmedia nothing changes.

Re: Espn HD

Its lower sometimes because it transmits in a different sound format such as Dolby Digital 2.1/5.1.

Sorry you had problems with the picture. Perhaps you have a signal fault that needs looking at. Does this happen on any other HD channels?

Thats not a reason for it to be lower. The box levels just need increasing for Dolby content. Sky had the same issue with their HD boxes until they changed the box software to match the analogue audio levels.

This will make them very loud when they are not broadcasting 5.1 though, when you switch between other channels.. I know other friends with SkyHD who say this now happens to them.

Did you only have an issue with ESPN HD? What area are you in?

Re: Espn HD

Must admit that I had loss of picture & sound about 3 times during the match, just assumed a broadcasting fault.

It happens I'm afraid

No it won't. A channel which has Dolby audio, has Dolby audio all the time. When its not 5.1 its 2.0. Sky 'normalised' the HD box sound so there wasn't as much difference between PCM audio channels and Dolby channels. Virgin will have to do the same.

I had a stop/start problem watching the game too. At least they didn't score in the meantime. Great match (unless you're a City fan!)

Re: Espn HD

I had the same problem too - but then I also had it watching the test match earlier in the day. I lost Sky Sports 1,2 & 3 for a few minutes. I had moved my V+ box earlier in the day though and i'd put it down to a loose connection somewhere. On a related note re.ESPN HD, I had the sound output via my Home Theatre and there were lip sync issues during the half time chat. I've noticed this on Living HD aswell. SD channels & BBC HD are always OK
