Virgin Box Went Bang

Sitting on my sofa at 7.30am the other morning, and there was a loud bang...

wtf was that I wondered, looked up and the Virgin box (standard box) had gone off, the room stank of fried electronics and on investigation the box was red hot.

Unplugged and am awaiting an engineer. Sounded and smelled like a cap went to me. Only a couple of months old at best.

Anyone else had anything similar?

Re: Virgin Box Went Bang

Maybe Steve from Newport in India near Newcastle remotely detonated your box, the same way he can do with cable modems. Apparently

Here.

(sorry, but electrics do give up the ghost sometimes)

Re: Virgin Box Went Bang

I know electronics aren't bombproof but I just wondered if it was common for these things to go in the manner described.

I doubt it was Steve from Newport In India, although the helpdesk guy did ask me to plug it in and turn it on.
I declined and then he insisted, I declined again, and asked for Mr Bransons address as I'd like to be able to send him a bill if my box catches fire and burns my house down

He's sending an engineer

Re: Virgin Box Went Bang

Sounds like a capacitor on the switch mode PSU went bang (either casued by a faulty cap or short circuit transistor
