Because the people who are knowledgable enough to stop themselves double clicking any random attachment, regardless of who it might be from, are, in my experience, in the minority, not the majority.
And, as discussed earlier, they can work round the the restriction relatively easily.

Hmmm I disagree totally here. People who are less technically savvy are the reason that there are IT support desks.
Why should the majority not be protected even if it comes at the annoyance of a minority, especially on a large, mass-market ISP such as Virgin Media? If we were talking about Andrews and Arnold or even Zen Internet I might see your point but Virgin are, along with Talk Talk and BT, mass market ISPs where a vast majority of customers are not technically knowledgeable and will happily click on an attachment so long as the bit of social engineering at the start is remotely convincing.

Being a person who assists regularly with PC problems and gives advice on internet sites I can assure you that it is the minority being affected by the majority.
Never presume that others are as savvy as you or I because most aren't and in truth I could possibly lose you on PC diagnostics in the same why that others like Seph. broadbandings etc can lose me on network/cable diagnostics.
Most users nowadays only know how to switch on, off check emails and surf and I always have and will continue to assist them where I can.

Re: We're launching our brand new Virgin Media Mail!
Another rumour quashed - thanks
Part of the rumour is that Google will archive your web sessions back to your mailbox using the IP address and a active Cookie for the new data retention laws on behalf of VirginMedia ?.

Re: We're launching our brand new Virgin Media Mail!
And that is an issue how exactly? If the law says that information has to be retained (which I don't know whether it does or not), then there is nothing either VM or Google or any other ISP can do anything about it. They will have to comply

An issue if the rumour is true that Google will be the archive on behalf of Virginmedia and some people see that as a permanent database outside of the retention laws agreed storage time.

Re: We're launching our brand new Virgin Media Mail!
And does anyone have any proof of that?
All that VM are using as far as I'm aware is Google Apps to run the mail service. Lots of information about it can be found here http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/b...urce=catch_all

when does a rumour need proof ?
You know aswell as i do that every rumour starts with what somebody supposed to have said on the phone or what a tech is supposed to have said on a call out.

If any retention is taking place as required by law, it will be in line with all other applicable laws

So when you gave the reply "no" to Virginmedia giving Google everybodys home address it was a "no" as in a guess as far as your aware.

Re: We're launching our brand new Virgin Media Mail!
What would a so called private agreement between VirginMedia and Google have to do with Google Apps ?
Your replys are no better than the guessing and speculation of rumours.
