VM unlimited music download plans coming undone?

So it appears.

"The service, which was due to launch before Christmas, has apparently been delayed as labels fail to agree on providing unlimited access to music downloads, despite a deal with Universal being agreed six months ago.

A source at EMI tells New Media Age that the label hopes to finalise a tie up this year but the uncapped feature would not be part of the deal. Unless all four majors and Merlin agree to offer the unlimited service, a cap on the number of downloads could be introduced."

Hardly surprising, the recording Industrie's unbridled corporate greed is legendary.

Would this mean that the imposition of Cview on the VM subscribers will be deferred seeing as this deal was muted as the reason for it.

Or was that just a pork filled snack in pastry.

Interesting points as ever Mick.

I think one of the issues here is the monetization (unbridled corporate greed as some may see it ) issue.

Universal obviously had the "heads up" as far as Cview was concerned. It's interesting, to me anyway, that after four hours and 135 views only now are these questions being asked.

It would appear that consumers, at least those who have looked in on this thread, are not too concerned about whether or not this "unlimited" (we have to use that term carefully) service might ever launch. We all know that people can access music downloads (both legally and illegally) from hundreds of resources on the web.

The question of quite why VM and Universal were so keen to get into bed needs to be studied.

Personally I have no interest in downloading any music so to comment on this subject wouldn't be of any interest to other members but I always enjoy reading your posts Mr A and hearing your views.

Of course a model like this which people would welcome would be too much to ask.
I agree the greed of these companies is what is fueling illegal downloads.
Fact.

You mean there might be other reasons apart from (as you put it) monetization.
I'm sure it has nothing to do with mutual admiration but Hey! You never know.

Fact.

But kkevin, with all due respect, you've no idea what the subscription or proposed individual track costs of such a service might be. Therefore you can't realistically allege "greed" unless, of course, you are using "free" as a comparator.

Fact.

Yes, it is potentially an interesting case however it should be noted that it appears to relate, almost entirely, to mechanicals (reproductions) based on copyrights which are quite possibly expired under the terms of the original licencing terms granted back in the 1950's (whatever they were) together with the fact that a pot of at least $50 million has been set aside to actually pay for them.

I certainly wouldn't and don't condone unlicenced copies - whether by labels or others.

That said, I wouldn't exacty be filled with confidence having been told that an advisor to the prosecution co-counsel can't spot a $60m v's $6m anomaly without the intervention of an uninvolved third party.
