Re: Football : Season 2009/2010

read that Ibrahimovich was 60m for Barca and although a decent player don't think he is worth that match. Not got Sky any more so not seen him play for Barca yet.

Poborsky was overated too plus Nani and plenty of other rubbish we have signed. Berba doesn't have a great record for his price tag either

Ibrahimovic was and still is a quality player, he's scored 8 goals in 10 games for Barca and scored another great goal against Madrid last night. He's nowhere near as overpriced as Tevez was.

I'm talking about him being overpriced, not overrated.

Nothing short of a lifetime ban for the dirty cheating bas......

Oh wait, FIFA deciding. Some meaningless fine and possibly a suspended ban.

Come on, even I think a ban is extreme. For he ref maybe, but not Henry.

Got to agree Punky, maybe a ban for the ref, but then did he see it?
If we want to start handing out lifetime bans on players using parts of their body to influence a game it is too late.
The list of " guilty " players is endless, Roy Caroll for example, blatantly scooped the ball out of the net for a perfectly good goal.
One thing they can do though is bring in video technology, literally seconds it would take to take the decision out of the refs hands, which in fairness sometimes are tied.

My argument is that he has to. If he didn't see it then his positioning isn't good enough to be a ref. I know that's harsh for humans who can make mistakes but the stakes we are talking about are immense.

We need video. Every game-changing even is proceeded with a break in play so it won't turn out like rugby or cricket. I can't understand why FIFA and UEFA are so resistant to it.

If Henry was banned for this, we would start seeing a lot more ball-to-hands happening. It wasn't overtly deliberate, although ethically he should have informed the ref, and would have been decent of him if he did. Unstandably he didn't but he is under no technical impetus to do. I can't see why he would need to be punished.

The fact is though that when that amount of bodies pile into the box, a quick motion like that will be very easily missed. We saw it from one of the many cameras and in slow montion. Stand 6/8 yard backs, chuck bodies in the way, and then it happens so quickly then I doubt anyone would have seen it. The goal line assistants would also have trouble if they were on the wrong side of the goal! Which is why.....

The Sunday Times (or one of the paper's I saw) had a diagram showing posutioning of officials & players when Henry handled and the views of the officials were all to varying degrees obstructed - would seem harsh to judge the referee when players are obvously moving all the time

I don't think we need video, what we need is for footballers to be accountable for their actions, Henry should be banned and miss the World Cup, guarantee you wouldn't see a repeat of that incident if players were properly punished, same with diving.

I agree. Henry knew he handled the ball at the time he did it. There is also conclusive proof he used his hand to control the ball. He even admitted he handled it after but it was "up to the referee" to penalise him. He shouldnt be allowed to play in the World Cup. Ban a cheat for the next 3 games in the competition that he's cheated in, and there'd be a lot less of it happening.

Re: Football : Season 2009/2010

Why exactly should Henry be made the example out of? If Trinidad and Tobago bitch and whine enough, can they get Peter Crouch banned too?

If footballers are to be accountable for their actions, the consequences of their actions must be known beforehand. If Henry is to be retrospectively punished, his punishment should be exactly the same as if the referee had spotted the handball during the match.

Re: Football : Season 2009/2010

As much as we're going to get either Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal or Man City in the semis, it might be worth a sneaky fiver on Villa for the League Cup - fingers crossed, we'll come up against a bunch of kids in the semis
