Angry Router driving me nuts, pls. help!!!

Hi,

hopefully someone can help me pls....

I bought a Netgear Router and connected all cables properly to my PC,Xbox 360 and of course NTL Samsung Box.
The Router is all in the green, the connections ok and flickering. My network connection says that the internet connection is ok,but I can't access the net on my pc,although it recognizes the router? What can I do?

Also, the Xbox 360 asks me for DNS? I tested the conn. and it is fine to the net,but it won't connect to Xbox Live cause of this dns thing?

Is the problem maybe that my pc,router and xbox all have the same IP? Any help would be welcome!

p.s. Please!

Re: Router driving me nuts, pls. help!!!

Disconnect everything but the wired connection to your PC.
Power everything down. Go and make a cup of tea/coffee.
Now power up the modem and wait for the lights to settle.
Now power up the router and wait for the lights to settle.
Now power up your PC. Hopefully you now have an internet connection.
If so then start worrying about your other devices.
If not come back and report what happened.

Good luck.

not a good idea to use the setup cd anyway, but you really need to phone virgin and get a modem installed as you will not be getting the full internet speed through your samsung box

And there you have the problem. You need to get a standalone modem.

In the meantime you might try cloning your PC's MAC to the router and then go through the routine I described. It might work but in any case can't hurt.

At the risk of being accused of being picky (wouldn't be the first time! ), shouldn't that be 192.168.1.1?

Not legally, no. The install job should be a quick one though so for the sake of the install fee and what you'll get from it, it's worth it.

Re: Router driving me nuts, pls. help!!!

wouldn't have thought he would have an install fee as virgin are suppoed to supply you with a seperate modem ( the op has never been supplied one ) so no install fee me thinks.
i'm sure someone else will tell me if thats right or wrong

There should be a option for it somewhere within in your routers configuration utility.
In my WRT54G2 it is under "SETUP" and the option is called "MAC Address Clone" so look for something similar.

The MAC to clone to is found at :
  1. Click on the Start Menu.
  2. Click on 'Run...'
  3. Type 'cmd' without quotes and press Enter.
  4. At the command prompt, type 'ipconfig /all' without quotes. (space between g and /)
  5. Alternatively, if using Windows XP, you can use the command 'getmac'.
  6. Your MAC Address is listed under 'Physical Address' as a series of 6 groups of two digits, letters and numbers, separated by dashes.
Once you have acquired your computers MAC it should be just a case of entering it in the appropriate box on your router and saving the config.
