I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip

Hi I'm interested in the Intel Pentium D 945 Socket 775 3.40GHZ Processor. I currently have a Pentium D 2.80GHZ chip but to play bluray I need 3.0ghz. My motherboard has a 775 socket and 2GB of Ram. What I'm unsure about is whether my computer's RAM will support this or does it not matter? Or What do I need to lookout for when buying a Intel Chip?

Make and model of motherboard would be useful. You may be able to use a multi-core CPU as a replacement.

Core2 duo or quad would almost certainly play better than the Pentium.

Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip

Like DaiNasty said, a Core2 would surely make the viewing better, as well as other overall performance. It's whether your motherboard can support a Core2 processor. What is your motherboard make/model?

Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip

To play blu ray you will also need a decent graphics card to output 1080p and plenty and I mean plenty of ram

Dai the Pentium D are dual core

Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip

ok a quick google and Asrock gives 2 options of board neither natches your actual name and neither does any in their support list which isnt unusual lol What chipset doesit have? The Presler core was the last of the Pentium D and Obviously Conroe was C2D ---------- Post added at 13:16 ---------- Previous post was at 13:13 ----------

http://www.asrock.com/news/show.asp?ID=90 is this the board? if it is then you can not have Quad core at all and the FSB maxes @ 800 mhz so its E2 duals or E4 duals with upto date bios

I think the E5 duals have an 800 fsb too unless there is something else that effects the compatibility im not aware of.

Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip

Out of interest how much where you planning to pay for your 945? They often tend to cost more than the basic C2Ds and perform significantly less. Just thinking that if the CPU is going to cost enough more it might be a better idea to get a newer mobo and C2D CPU for only a small amount more than you would pay for the 945 alone. And thats assuming your board doesn't support one of the lower end C2Ds which it may as Zing has pointed out.

Then of course came Conroe

Just for comparison, the E6300 on stock (1.86Ghz) was faster than my 805D at 4Ghz.

How much is the Quadcore Dou and is it safe to buy secondhand?

Dai mentioned that the core2dou or quad plays much better than Pentium D. I've looked through the list that supports my motherboard and have not seen any of the ones hes mentioned. (I need at least 3.0ghz to play blu-ray)

So the Pentium D 945 3.40GHZ i want to buy is suitable for my computer according to the list. but is it my best option?

Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip

Indeed, it mentions 3Ghz as a base speed, perhaps for the Pentium or Pentium D series.
The Core2 or Core2Quad series is a hell of a lot more powerful however, so, 2Ghz+ should be fine for Bluray.

Looking through that supported list of processors though, most of them are old and no longer sold as new parts. The ones that are still new cost £140+ it seems.
I'd wait for zing to advise you here.
