Re: Football : Season 2009/2010

Why does the times have the headline Manchester United block Liverpool physiotherapist's England move when the last line of the article says

We refute any suggestion that we have been pressurised by Manchester United

Re: Football : Season 2009/2010

Eduardo has been charged by UEFA - faces a 2 match ban.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...pe/8223917.stm

A good step forward IMHO. Looks like Man Yoo sold Ronaldo just in time.

Re: Football : Season 2009/2010

What i don't understand is, if a player is caught diving during a match they get a yellow card, if Eduardo had been caught diving he would have got a yellow card and that would have been the end of it. So why will he get a two match ban because the ref missed it in the game? I wonder if UEFA will do this for every player that dives, or just for the English clubs.

Re: Football : Season 2009/2010

I think it needs to go through something like this (i.e.. a post match investigation and a ban) as it'll make the many players who do take the risk of a yellow card and dive more likely not to do it in the first place..

Perhaps they need to knock up the diving offence to a red card offence in the future as currently it's a gamble that has nothing to do with playing well that many players seem willing to take

I do hope this is a constant feature. So many players have dived and nothing happens. Often In much more Important contexts.

Then you might get moments where a player is actually fouled and he is sent for diving.

If Eduardo had been caught diving during the match he would have failed to "deceive the referee" which I think is the crux of the UEFA charge. He also would not have got the penalty.

As long as this is consistantly applied then this must be a good thing.

Yes, It won't be though. Some Madrid player dives and nothing will happen. UEFA want to make an example of this one case. Arsenal have been the victim of dives to which nothing happened before.

UEFA president Michel Platini has signalled an end to the big spending enjoyed by clubs like Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid.
With one eye on the global recession, Platini wants to usher in a new era of cash restraint and has unveiled plans for financial reforms that will force clubs with wealthy benefactors to change their habits – or face possible exclusion from European football.
Platini’s vision is for all clubs in European competition to spend only what they earn from football revenues – and he claims he has the backing of Chelsea’s super-rich owner Roman Abramovich.
The rules would outlaw ‘sugar daddies’ such as Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour – who has spent £200million in transfer fees alone in his first year as owner of Manchester City
I noticed how pleased Platini was when Utd were beaten by Barcelona back in May, however, I am not sure Platini's way is the way to go or not regarding sugar daddies. Chelsea have now spent all what Abramovich wants to, is apparantly backing Platini's idea.

I always remember the song, Same old Arsenal, always cheating, now we have whinger Wenger complaining about the charge from EUFA, no matter what the ban, he and Arsenal should suffer, I suggest he has a very good look at the video, the Celtic keeper did NOT touch him. disgraceful.

Yes talk about double standards, quite happy when they are blowing millions but don't want anyone else to, Heaven forbid some one else should break into their exclusive little Champions League club

Platini added: "It's mainly the owners that asked us to do something - Roman Abramovich, (AC Milan's) Silvio Berlusconi, (Inter Milan's) Massimo Moratti. They do not want to fork out from their pockets any more.

Oh and I notice the likes of United and Real weren't included, seems as though it's alright to be in hock to the banks but not for some rich guy to gift the club cash, seriously they are in danger of killing the golden goose.

What he is annoyed about is this make Eduado the first player in British Football to be charged with diving. There is no indication this is part of a larger crackdown either.

Dives happen all the time and UEFA need to either be consistant or leave it with the ref. I support the former but I do not support them randomly deciding to punish a player and then to leave all other divers unpunished. As Punky alluded to, Where is Ronaldo's charge? When he dives for Madrid, and he will, we UEFA step in there? Or will they be scared to charge Real Madrid?

Re: Football : Season 2009/2010

The authorities have to crack down hard on this matter, we see it week in, week out, the sad thing is referees get conned all the time, BUT referee's have to be tough and depend on the linesman, but this often goes as the officials are soft and don't want to feel the wrath of the club. What we fans have to realise is that, say for example that Joe Bloggs United are playing a top club from the prem, and a player from the prem side does a dive in the box and wins the game, as they don't want an embarrasing defeat on there hands, this is what is wrong with the game, the diver should have an instant red card and banned for 4 games and the club fined heavily, BUT the FA and PL won't enforce it, as they are petrified of the big boys.

Re: Football : Season 2009/2010

i'm glad they are doing something about cheating and diving but it needs to be every time not just a one off.

We see it time and again where a play is kicked somewhere but falls over holding another part of their body, or gets contact in the neck \ shoulder but rolls over holding their face. Will they be punished too.

The sad thing is if there had been the slightest brush of contact everyone would say it was a fair pen
