I wonder if it was a one-off or if he had a more long-term problem.
The article seems to say he didn't have a history of drug use...either way none of us knows whats going on in someone elses mind, he obviously knew what he was doing as the tox report says a "massive dose of heroin".
As you say though Derek very sad indeed.
Maybe there is more to it then it seems imean how ironic would it be for someone to get back at the guy who has been dealing with drugs to overdose him. Do they not do random drug tests on officers involved in the drugs area ?.
