Smile Update to Sticky - Useful info Outlook Express

The Sticky item - Useful info configuring Outlook express and Error Codes has the following
0x800CCC0D / 0x800CCC0E / - cannot find server / cannot connect to server †“ check the server names are correct:
incoming: pop.ntlworld.com or 62.253.162.50 or if you have setup an IMAP account: imap.ntlworld.com or 62.253.162.70
outgoing: smtp.ntlworld.com or 62.23.162.40
The server may not be responding because it is offline †“ try pinging the server address and check you get replies. If so, check that a firewall is not blocking your internet connection. The executable for Outlook Express is Msimn.exe.

Note the smtp.ntlworld.com IP appears to have changed to 62.253.162.40
The 62.23 IP address does not work.

Re: Update to Sticky - Useful info Outlook Express

You shouldn't use IP's when a named domain or subdomain is available..
It negates the use of the DNS service, which is a fundamental of internet operability.
One of the most important uses of domain naming is to enable the host to change their addresses or locations transparently.

I wouldn't suggest offering an IP in this sort of configuration issue.

Re: Update to Sticky - Useful info Outlook Express

I agree. I didn't want to be using the IP address when the domain is available. But.

See my post about email problems that I posted earlier this evening.

The only way that NTL Tech Support could get my email working was to get me to put in the IP 62.253.162.40 instead of smtp.ntlworld.com

I am a little concerned to be leaving the IP address in the account settings.

If you can only access a domain via IP instead of name, the first diagnosis should have been DNS or proxy problems.

Did they get you to change either of those?

Re: Update to Sticky - Useful info Outlook Express

Thanks.
NTL Tech Support didn't suggest anything once they had got my email working by using the TCPIP address rather than the domain name. (smtp.ntlworld.com).

I questioned using the TCPIP, to which the welsh techy lady answered that she always advised people with problems to directly enter the TCPIP address.

From the sticky 'changing DNS & Proxies' http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=8783 I forced the DNS to BT and then Freeserve. smtp.ntlworld.com still not working.

Normally I use Outlook Express but Thunderbird also fails to be able to send emails with smtp.ntlworld.com rather than 62.253.162.40, so in Firefox tried using above process to force proxy away from COSH 8 to BRTN 3. tested that I was using the brtn proxy. No effect couldn't send emails.

I think I am stuck with leaving the TCPIP in. OK till they change the TCPIP address of their smpt server.

I wondered whether I might have a trojan that has highjacked my outgoing email to an alternative tcpip address? (neither norton or adaware flag up anything).
